I just had a minor rock impact resulting in a windshield chip on my 2016 Tacoma (800 miles on it) and within minutes it split passenger half of the windshield. I looked online and found multiple other reports but could not find a consolidated thread here on it. Does this new "multi-glass" mean quiet but wimpy? How many others have had windshield damage they felt was due to frail glass? My old 4Runner took many rocks to the windshield and there were even several small chips but it never seemed this fragile! At over $1400 to replace this seems something that needs to be addressed by Toyota if many others are also seeing this...

I thought this of my 2011 trd sport, had it less than 5 years
and replaced the windshield 6x. Even the tiniest of pebbles that
came up and made contact resulted in a chip and or crack.

Sorry if this is a duplicate but I could not find old posts. Is there a link to it or results somewhere?

No problems yet, but had 3 shields in my 2006.

My opinion - the front window is too much angled straight up and down.
My truck catches bugs like crazy - much more than any other Toyota truck (4 of them) I've ever had, where the window was angled more. When angled more I'm thinking the moving wind stream carries bugs up and over the top of the cab (not all bugs but most of them). Not this 2016 truck - it slams them all right flat ass into the window - and maybe small gravel ends up doing the same kind of thing - or it is a glancing blow and not right smack into the window.

i think the bugs are just attracted to your sexy self. or maybe the truck.

none of the big Mack/International/GMCs with flat windshields (that i drove) ever got cracks on them (completely vertical). i think their new sound dampening shield has likely created some weakness...

Get this truck. Get safelite. call it a day.

If you're talking semi trucks, probably cars/small trucks throw more rocks up than anything (most all semi's have big mud flaps).
I don't know of your reference to "sound dampening shield" - what is it?
My truck windshield has been hit with gravel a couple times - but at low speed by cars in front of me. No broken window but one hell of a noise when it hit.
FYI - no sexy here and a plain jane truck too - used as a truck (you can lean on it and throw 2x4's in the back).

I try and keep a good distance between me and the car in front , it really helps avoiding debris and it`s a lot safer.

The windshields are way higher on those trucks than the Tacoma, relative to the road. Less rocks will bounce off the road or be flung up by vehicles that high.

I think the angle of impact has a lot to do with the more noticeable chips on the Tacoma windshield (I haven't had any yet but it makes sense). The Tacoma has a small windshield and a pretty steep angle of incline compared to most vehicles these days, my wife has an Explorer and its a massive window that creates a far more sloped angle. This would deflect rocks better than the Tacoma's windshield resulting in a less substantial impact on the glass.

It may be why people are getting more chips compared to other vehicles they've owned!

All glass has to pass DOT standards and i can't see Toyota skimping on this as the windshield helps prevent roof collapse in roll-over accidents.

Minor?...Hmmm...it was a pretty loud bang with no visible damage while driving..About 3 minutes later I noticed the crack and it continued to grow from the center of the windshield toward the driver's side...Once I got home I discovered the impact point...weak windshields, tailgating or shit happens...Windshields replaced and I'm still crazy about my truck.

Don't ever get an FJ. Those windshields are more vertical and really do get covered in bugs!

Two months ago I was on I-95 heading home with a motorcycle in the bed. A car ahead of me and two lanes over hit a large piece of metal, about 6 feet long laying in the road. It looked like it was a large piece of trim from an 18 wheeler. The metal shredded the LF tire and he went into the median guardrail at 70 or so. As this was unfolding, The metal he hit sailed over the car next to me and smacked my windshield, then went over the roof, missed the motorcycle all together and caught the guy behind me, impaling his front end. My windshield has two 5-6 inch scratches in it but did not crack. The roof went unscathed. It happened fast and I thought for sure it was coming through the windshield as I was trying to avoid it......I have a 2007 and have one small repair from a rock chip two years ago.

Got a small chip on the highway. 2800 miles so far. Does seem more sensitive than other vehicles, just hoping for an aftermarket supply before I get a crack.

Dents in roof from poorly loaded canoe. Broken side mirror from blown transfer truck tire. Scuffed up front bumper from thinking I was still in a corolla. Graham cracker embedded upholstery from a crazy kid.
I'm at 1100 miles and no cracks in the windshield or paint chips/scratches yet.

Mine has been cracked, replaced, and moved on. It was an aftermarket windshield, but still totaled 1300-1400. I paid the 100 deductible and moved on.
