Mine is less annoying after having the fluid topped off, at least it seems to be so far (about 1500 miles).I think the truck is great but the powertrain is a huge disappointment coming from my 2005. If they don't make any changes, I'll likely trade for a manual 2017.

Those are the ones that refuse to check the F'n tranny themselves and want the dealer to do it (who refuses) while they wreck their own transmission... WTF I say..!!

Mine will hunt from 6th-5th-4th with the cruz and above 70mph going up hill.
However, 5th & 6th are both overdrive gears for gas savings, so I would expect that, nothing wrong there or that needs fixing. On our 4.0L 4R ltd. It will hunt from 5th (the overdrive) to 4th.
Maybe what Toyota should have done is given us 8 spds. But instead they gave us the S mode and Manuel mode...Cheapskates!
    Cheers!

I personally am starting to get to the point of liking it.. The weird switch between Atkinson and normal modes is weird, but honestly really fun sometimes.

He's right. At the time of me posting this comment, only 33% are happy with their transmission. "Drives me nuts" and "Eh, I'm learning to live with it but could be better" fall under the negative category if you ask me.

Using cruise control @75mph is what drives me nuts. It jumps from 4th, 5th or 6th all the time. Will never stay in one gear, and the roads are flat here in eastern NC. Just have to live with it driving in 4th most of the time. Besides that issue with cruise control . In town driving is okay for me.

This weekend I put 2 dirt bikes in my bed and attempted to maintain 70 MPH on the highway. My truck never saw 6th gear, but what REALLY bothered me was the fact that it shifted all the way down to 3rd and stayed at 5,000 RPM just trying to maintain speed, causing my MPG to drop below 15. This was with ECT on, in D (not S), on flat highway. I love the truck below 65 MPH. But, over 65 MPH it's making me regret moving up from a 2nd gen.

If there's a problem with how the truck constantly shifts when cruise is set to 75, why set it so high? Speed limit here is 70 and over 80 is an automatic reckless driving charge in VA, that's damn near as bad as a DUI first offense here.

When traffic allows, I set might at 70 or just under and haven't had any problems, truck pretty much stays in gear whether in the flat coast or towards the mountains in the west. It will shift from time to time on the incline but it's almost impercetible, like jumping from 1800 RPMs to 2300 RPMs but it doesn't constantly hunt like some people report

At least mine doesn't anyway and fluids were checked at delivery before being driven off the lot. Truck was built in TX and has 4600 miles on it now.

I really think 6th gear is a "bonus" gear in that It's not nessarily meant to cruise in 6th. The ratios of the new 6 speed auto are similar to the 5 speed auto of the gen 2 but with one added gear. Naturally the gen 3 with weaker torque, won't be able to hold 6th all the time and it shouldn't have to. I don't think the 4.0 could hold 6th all the time either.

Maybe 6 th gear is a bonus gear for downhill use only ?
Reminds me of a jeep with an automatic , might as well forget you have overdrive or get used to it hunting for a lower gear non stop

It might very well be. I think Toyota realized if they just threw another gear on it it would, during some times, have to work less hard, perhaps going downhill. I don't think Toyota got very innovative with this approach. Weaker motor + one extra cog = better MPG. That was their formula. Unfortunately, the driver pays for it in daily driving when they are not at 6,000 RPM's lol.

How would that be considered 'fun'? When these vehicles are hunting gears is it noticeable in terms of engine noise, feeling it inside the cabin, etc? If my vehicle hunted gears to the extent of that video listed above, and it was noticeable inside the cabin, I'd take it straight back to the dealership and tell them to keep it.

Once I stopped stomping on the floor every time I came up to a stoplight/sign I liked it fine. After 10 years of exclusively manual transmission vehicles not doing my own shifting took a little getting used to. :notsure:
