Rear Frame plate reinforcement

Reference vehicle is a 1st gen DCSB.

Looking at -

• CBI frame plates @ $70 (2 pieces/side)
• Trail gear @ $109 (1 piece/side)

Any feedback on either one?

Trail Gear's is 3/16"
CBI's is unlisted
Trimming for both for DC

 

I think that is quite expensive .

Then if you can`t make your own I guess the price is something you can live with.

do they really do any good.

Is the reinforcement for repairing rust or just for adding strength to the c-channel part of the frame?
If you are repairing rust you can check out autorust.com they have what they call Safe-T-Cap kits, $250 for both sides.

 

There are two types of reinforcement for the 1st gen:

1. The above plates that get welded onto the outer of the rear frame within the wheel well. This helps strengthen the already weak rear section of the frame under the bed.
2. The plates that box in the C channeled rear frame.

 

Do you have links to the two items? Do they provide detailed pics of said items?

IIRC, some brands of reinforcement plates neglect to have the cutout/slot necessary to avoid the protrusion on the driver's side frame for the gas filler tube bracket. There is a lot of additional work involved if that cutout is missing.

Edit: Not sure if the dc frame is the same as mine.

Neither, of those plates appear to have the cutouts that my plates have.

Now that I look closer, there are 3 places (2 driver, 1 passenger) that prevent a plate from sitting flush against the frame. For welding, these three spots must be accommodated. Which means cutouts in the plates. the aforementioned filler tube mounting bracket and the stock upper shock mount studs.

You need to look at how the filler tube mount is setup on your truck. It may be different from the way my 6 ft bed is setup. The shock mount studs will be the same.

 

Hmm... first I have heard about the filler tube bracket but then again, both vendors state "trimming required for DC".

I am going to create a paper template and then probably go with the TG set and use the template to mark on the plates for the "trimming"...

 

@Yetimetchkangmi have you seen these? Only downside is they are only 1/8th inch. I think 3/16th is the minimum I would do.

maybe they make them in 3/16ths too.
