welcome to my build. On 7/4/2014, I caved in and upgraded from a 2003 4dr to a 2014 4dr Tacoma. I wanted to build a truck capable of handling semi-difficult trails to our local camp/fish/dive sites, but since it's my daily driver, I'm not planning on going all-out... I think.

Big mahalo to all the local TW Oahu ohana for their advice, help, and guidance. I still have a few more things to upgrade, but with a 4.5 yr old, and 1.5 yr old twins, I think I'm good... for now.

Said goodbye to this, to upgrade to my current Tacoma -

    2003.jpg

7/4/14 - took delivery with only 4 miles on the odometer -

    IMG_0719.jpg

    IMG_0720.jpg

    IMG_0721.jpg

7/5/14 - mounted up my matte bronze Countersteers wrapped with 265/75/r16 Goodyear Duratracs from my old Tacoma... matched pretty nice. I only had to remove the mini front plastic flap, but other than that, no rubbing issues -

    IMG_0779.jpg

9/14/14 - my first real upgrade... basically watched @bullaculla and @luka install OME 885x/5100's, rear 5100's, and Icon AAL's. I never got into tinkering around on vehicles, so this was my first big learning experience, so hopefully I can tinker/adjust/upgrade stuff myself -

    IMG_1459.jpg

took a little break thinking I was done, but the more I followed the TW Hawaii forum, the more I realized that I should've bought the "good stuff" from the beginning. thanks to Sarah from Boss4x4 (@LikeABoss4x4), I was able to get all kinds of goodies through Hawaii group buys. so off we went...

7/2/15 - caved in to a camper shell after months of searching for a snugtop locally. Snugtop XtraVision (XV), interior LED light, roof-mounted gear net, sliding glass and screen windows, flip-down front sliding glass window. spent an ungodly amount on this due to the fact that there's only ONE authorized dealer, and shipping to Hawaii is absolutely insane.

    IMG_4320.jpg

7/8/15 - painted (Rustoleum satin black) and installed a Pelfreybilt aluminum IFS skid, purchased through Boss4x4 Hawaii GB -

    IMG_4357.jpg

    IMG_4359.jpg

    testing everything out -

9/16/15 - swapped my skewp hood for a "normal" hood with fellow TW Oahu member @k3v11n -

    IMG_5011.jpg

    IMG_5012.jpg

9/19/15 - installed the SPC LR UCA's. when I stay "installed", I mean, basically watched @hacklerjason install it. haha, but it was a good learning experience for me.

    IMG_5070.jpg

11/7/15 - took advantage of All Pro's free shipping to Hawaii deal, and hooked up with @1uzrnr to get a smoking deal on a set of APEX bolt-on sliders, without fill plates. got them locally powdercoated semi-gloss black (mahalos to @hacklerjason for the referral). bolted them on myself, which was an interesting feat, and thanks to @deeezy for the mag-drill help.

    IMG_0211.jpg

    IMG_0469.jpg

11/14/15 - received my Icon 2.5 extended travel coilovers a couple weeks prior, and had to setup a rear leaf swap (my stock + Icon AAL for OME Dakars) and suspension install at the secret Hawaii shop :D. also scored @rka's used Icon VS rear shocks and ended up selling my 1 year old suspension (885/5100's) to recoup some of my money. I also removed my front swaybar and ended up selling it on Craigslist. also, at some point prior to this, I installed the All Pro u-bolt flip kit and front/rear Wheeler's Superbumps.

    IMG_0224.jpg

    12/17/15 - finally hit 10,000 miles. yes, I don't drive far.

    IMG_0620.jpg

12/18/15 - scored a used set of Morimoto XB LED foglights from fellow TW Oahu member @hoenah808. installed and I'm happy with the output and color.

    IMG_1142.jpg

    IMG_0626.jpg

    IMG_0628.jpg

12/21/15 - got my trailer relocation harness from fellow TW Oahu member @bullaculla, along with some of his infamous Bullaculla tritium FOB's.

    IMG_0666.jpg

    IMG_0665.jpg

12/27/16 - last upgrade before moving from Oahu and back home to the Big Island. @kh7nm was nice enough to install my 22" OPT7 LED light bar and wire up the Mictuning switch to my dash. super stoked he was able to install cause this was way over my head. used an iron bar mounted to the stock crash bar brackets, so I could tuck the light bar behind the lower grill (no cutting).

more pics and hopefully upgrades to come...

haven't really been able to properly "wheel" my truck since my time is limited with kids. since I usually surf before work, sometimes I get a little adventure in if the surf sucks. here's some random adventure shots. sorry, no action shots yet since most of these are solo missions, exploring the coastline looking for fishing spots, secluded beaches or tide pools, or just burning gas.

there's so much more to explore... I just don't have the time right now. all those pics are all within 15-20 mins from downtown Kona. I really gotta ask @Konaborne where the spots are. I actually found some of these just from using Google Maps satellite view, or Google Earth, and just chancing um. kinda sketchy without a hilift or recovery gear though :D

all this time, I've been running around with my 17" OEM spare, but no OEM lugnuts :anonymous:

sooooo..... after some thought, I'm getting a matching 5th rim from Dustin (@JdMeF9SiR2) for a ridiculous deal. I guess the matte bronze I have now is "outdated" but I got lucky and he had 2 "blemished" wheels sitting around in my version of the matte bronze.

this means I'm gonna be shopping around for new tires. I think my Duratracs (C load) have served me well, but the weak sidewalls have me a little nervous with all the sharp lava rocks here. so far, this is my list of possible tires:
    • Cooper STT Pro
    • Cooper ST Maxx
    • Mastercraft MXT (supposedly the same manufacturer as Cooper?)
    • Goodyear MTR
    • BFG KM2
    • BFG KO2 (if all else fails)
my preference in sizes are: 265/75, 255/85, or 285/75 (a little hesitant about this size).

any input? this is a mostly DD truck, seeing rocky offroad stuff maybe 3-4 times a month. I don't really like cleaning mud, so I typically avoid having my entire truck baked with mud :crapstorm:

Are you able to find 255s there for a good price? I was reading up on the Mastercraft because the price is nice and read a guy only got 20k before they were nearly bald. Just go with Brooks hookup at Goodyear and get the MTR. Aren't some of the braddahz currently running them?

    Amazon Prime

ST Maxx or KM2's in 255's. for a set of 5 off Amazon, plus local mount/balance, still comes out cheaper than some quotes for a set of FOUR tires. LOL. I wouldn't mind going with @Vanguard's deal, but I don't have a way to get them to from store to YB port to ship... or maybe Goodyear might do it. I dunno, I gotta ask. MTR's on Amazon were around $265 (prime) for 265's. just hesitant about running 255's or 285's cause of the possible fitment issues in the stock spare location, especially since I'm not in the market for a swingout and definitely not putting the spare in my bed/camper (no room for surfboards :bananadead:).

Yup. So far they are great! Ride on the highway the same as my 285 Duratracs. MPG seems about the same, but they are a little taller.. I still have a very tiny bit of rubbing off road, but not nearly as bad as the 285's. I have only offloaded with them in dry conditions, but didn't even need 4wd.

Only down side is they don't look as tough, since they're so skinny

I keep flip-flopping between the 255 KM2's, 285 Cooper ST Maxx or STT Pro, or playing it safe and sticking to 265 Coopers (so I know I can fit the spare in the stock location). I wanted 255 ST Maxx, but Lex Brodie's won't bring them in, and Amazon Prime won't ship them here

I don't have exact pics, but this is basically how I did it:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/led-light-bar-mounted-in-lower-bumper.255567/page-5#post-9611644

if you pop the hood and look down at the crash bar brackets, you'll see 2 holes (unused). basically, I measured the thickness of the bracket and hole size, bought 2 screws and some washers, and lined up the angle iron to the existing holes and bolted it on. if your angle iron doesn't line up exact, you may need to enlarge the holes, but at least you don't need to drill new ones (unless you wanna mount the bar back a little). if you look at the pics, the bar is right behind the lower grill, but not touching. the only downside is that you can't fit a cover on (i.e. amber, smoked, black lens) cause there's no room. I had to use angle iron cause my light bar is a 22". I think the 30" ones span the gap, so you don't need the angle iron. I can post some pics on here tomorrow.

well, well, well... I was finally able to convince Lex Brodie's that the 255/85/16 ST Maxx does exist and they agreed to order it (from the mainland), and have it sent over in the next shipment, which lands in a month.

this might sound strange to anyone outside of Hawaii, but a majority of the Hawaii people with lifted trucks are running 285/75's or bigger (guys who most likely offroad), or stretching MT's on 20"x12"/22"x12"/22"x14" Fuel or Force rims (guys who never offroad). the only other 255/85's I could find were KM2's, which would've been slightly cheaper than the ST Maxx :(

    now the wait begins...

now that I have my tires on order, my next issue is rear shocks. I'm really stuck on what to get with the Dakars. according to @OZ-T's Dakar measurement thread, I'm sitting about 7/8" lower (23-3/4") than the average result for a DCSB, with the full leaf pack. I'm not sure if this is the result of running a camper shell, and broken-in leafs though
