Is Toyota finally shipping 16's with proper fluid levels?

I have a TRD Sport with 5K miles...dropping off tomorrow to get the transmission replaced. Slips going up hills and takes a long time to go into D or R.

Short answer on the OPs question - no.

Toyota shipped the second gens with low trans fluid for a decade, and kept doing so with the 2016 redesign.. if they were going to address the issue on the manufacturing level, they'd have done so already - and they haven't, and likely won't.

Too small of an issue to spur manufacturing line correction, I assume.

Wow, they are replacing it? Are you getting a remanufactured tranny? How did you get them to replace: did the dealer initiate or did you have to open a case with Toyota? I haven't heard on here of any needing replacement yet... although I haven't been around TW very long.

Were there a lot of reports of trannies going bad in 2nd gens then? Moreso than other vehicles? I wasn't aware this was an ongoing issue.

My truck was built on 4/14 and is having hesitation when going from reverse into drive only when the truck is cold. Other times it is fine. I made an appointment to take my truck in on Saturday to have the fluid checked. I originally asked them to check it when I bought the truck. The dealer said it was checked but who knows if they were telling the truth.

Its called "Kaizen", they tell the outside world it stands for Continuous Improvement which sounds like they are trying to constantly make the product better and better. But in the inside world the so called "Improvement" stands for speeding up the Cycle Time and or reducing content, if they squirt a little less fluid in each truck it goes a few seconds faster down the line plus they saved a few pennies on the missing fluids.

Just curious, a lot of you are stating that your truck is being built, does that mean you ordered it with uncommon packages or did the dealership just not have what you wanted? Are they cheaper if you have to order them?

Mine was built in TX, first week of Feb, 4600 miles on it now and I average 20.8 miles mpg on my daily 20 mile commute of mostly highway driving at speeds of 45 -65 mph.

I paid the dealership to properly check the transmission fluid while I watched before delivery of the truck, fluid level was correct. It had 4 miles on it at delivery.

Never use cruise or the ECT button and I've up sized the tires, added sliders and a toolbox for additional weight. Mpg is what I consider to be correct for the mods installed.

No problems with the way the truck drives.

It baffles me that Toyota is aware of low fluid levels and does not address the issue. When adding a tow package, the cooler and lines to the front of the truck simply requires more fluid. This could easily be accomplished on the assembly line.

Keep in mind that the dealerships charge the manufacturer every time they have to go through the "process" of adding fluid. Worldwide, this would be expensive

    OH YES THIS.

This is --exactly how Toyota became the biggest auto manufacturer in the world, and 13th largest corporation
in the world, by screwing everyone.--

Just a thought, yes the dealers charge corporate every time they check one but that does not mean Toyota is paying. If Toyota is saying there are no issues with the fluid level and see no need to change the fill procedure on the line, they could just as easily deny every claim from every dealer. Not saying this is happening, just that it could be happening.

In order to have the fluid checked under warranty I let them know that there is hesitation when shifting from reverse to drive when the truck is cold. I would expect they would be paid for this kind of warranty claim from Toyota.

This sounds about right if they've incorporated a new computer mapping that avoids more of the EPA shift-a-nomics. Traditional driving would have gotten me similar results in the first 400 miles or so for my ORDCLB which was built in March (I've had all the "bad" symptoms). I'm approaching 1000 miles and my MPGs have improved by a couple MPGs recently, and I'm able to improve by several more MPGs by baby-ing and using other techniques. My best results for drives over 15 miles in city/highway combined (to/from work) have been 24ish MPG. I don't baby it constantly though, so my tank averages are winding up around 18 - 19. I'm also finding my own record keeping shows I'm getting about 1.5 MPG better than the computer.

I've always been more of an average driver as far as aggressiveness goes. Occasionally passing, and occasionally being passed. Maybe I'm getting older, but thoughts of the savings between 18 and 23+ miles per gallon have been frequenting my mind with all this focus. $20 - $30/week is pretty significant.

My fluid was checked today. It was a little over a half quart low. I know that doesn't sound like much. I noticed the gas mileage gauge showing consistently around 25 when I was driving home. Most of the time it hovered around 20. I also noticed that on slight inclines the truck did not downshift to 5th. I told the dealership that the transmission was slipping (it wasn't) and that it was hesitating in the morning going from reverse to drive (which it was) and that I was concerned about the fluid level on the transmission. I figured asking them to check the fluid without having any issues probably wouldn't have happened. I'm going to politley call corporate this week and ask for an extended warranty on the power train. I am legitimately concerned that running the truck with low fluid would cause the engine to work harder than it should have to and could have caused harm to the transmission. I'll keep you updated. I think we can put to rest that they're still coming with low fluid. Also my truck is a Mexican.

Folks. You have to remember that all automatic vehicles have a reserve fluid level. This means that if the transmission has a 10 quart capacity, a smaller portion is needed for operation and the rest for reserve and cooling. If it is 1/2 - 1 quart low, this simply means that there is 1/2 - 1 quart less in the reserve.

Another example is the windshield washer fluid reservoir. If it is a bit low, it doesn't affect the operation. Another example is your master cylinder. If it is a tad low, it doesn't affect your braking.

You guys are making far more of this than it is. My truck was 1 quart low as well but I simply had the dealership top it off and all is well. There is NO WAY that you can feel a difference in drivability by being low by such a small amount.

Toyota will laugh at you for requesting an extended warranty. It is simply not warranted (no pun intended)

You all will spend your time more wisely worrying about the pitiful choice we face in November's election.
