Theres a ton of spatter but I think thats just part of flux core welding (no gas)

Not to bad, I would try turning your wire speed down a little to see if that helps reduce spatter. Keep practicing and trying different techniques and you will find one that you like and feel comfortable with. Being comfortable will help you lay some really nice beads.

How's the smoke?

 

Since im on a back deck, the air moving through actually clears it quite well, compared to when I tried inside the guy's shop when I bought it. I just tried pulling the bead for the first time...not so good haha

I should have also caveated those pics with its a Millermatic 141 MIG machine, using .030 flux core wiring.

After a short break and getting back at it, the beads got nicer (for flux core) and the I think the wire speed helped with the spatter.


(this metal is also way over heated since I use both sides to maximize the coupons) This center section I dont think looks right, it was too raised for my liking. I first thought it was too cold but I didnt change any settings on the machine in these 3 items, I think i was just moving too fast)


This was the last one I did, I think its the best looking one, even though it was near the end and I kinda burned through the tip but...o well

Levi, do you think with these kinds of welds that they look decent enough (i didnt say good haha) to actually hold? The penetration on the other sides have been looking good and consistent.

What technique are you using? The 2 big keys to welding are setting the machine right and being consistent. I agree with Levi, turn down the speed some. Ask heather to help for a min and begin welding then have her slowly turn the wire speed down or up. It's the easiest way to get it where you want. Try and shoot for a consistent sound. Don't pay attention to the spatter as that's part of the deal with no gas, instead focus on the sound. You can basically set the speed by just hearing how it's welding and not even seeing the weld.

 

Ummm, did you just recommend someone to adjust their welder setting while welding? Surely not. Not you.

Adjusting the voltage setting on a welder while running a bead is the worst thing you can ever do to a welder.
