This is what I was going to recommend. Should be able to tell very quickly if this is the issue. I had a Cummings prior to my Tacoma that I actually twisted the front drive shaft just from pulling a friend out of the snow back. No yanking but a straight pull. The only way I chased it down was pulling the shaft because visually, you could not see the very slight twist and this was on a brand new truck with factory tires at the time so it was replaced under warranty.

So...the shop calls me today and says true, the drive line was out of balance. The reason the vibration came back is because of a bad ujoint. One had been replaced, but the other had not. This bad ujoint caused the drive line to go out of balance again. so they say they are replacing the bad ujoint, rebalancing the drive line and that should fix it. Picking up truck tomorrow and will be able to test. Fingers crossed.

I have never seen a defective universal joint cause a balancing to go out. Hmmm.

All I've ever had to do is replace the universal joint and call it a day.

I hope they have it pegged this time. It would seem that they would have found the u-joint when they had the shaft out for balancing.

    Good luck!

I went to get my truck this AM and the drive line balancing was delayed. Should have by the end of the day. I plan to freeway drive it a while to really make sure it's fixed. Shop showed me a picture of the ujoint and how it was sliding out of place. They claim this egg-rolled the drive line causing it to lose balance. JimmyH says he's aint see this before so....I don't have the knowledge to hold these guys accountable to any excusable vomit they spew me.

As soon as I get the truck and test, I'll post.

I agree. It can/ will cause vibration with the bad ujoint, but to have the drive shaft itself go out of balance from it sounds like bs to me.

I have seen a defective U-joint before, I've never seen it effect the drive shaft to where it needs to be balanced after the defective joint was replaced.

Truck back from shop. I'm cautiously optimistic. So here's the rundown of what was done: 2 U-Joints replaced and the drive line balanced (again). I drove home yesterday (10mi) from the shop and didn't feel any vibration. This happened last time though so in the back of my mind, I'm waiting for it to return. Today, truck feels really good.

I'm thinking it was a u-joint the entire time. Looks like you're good!
