About to hit 80K...

Hey guys/gals,

I have a 4.0L 2005 TRD Sport 6-Speed Manual and I'm about to hit 80K. I have done all of my own maintanence thus far... but that has been limited to:

Oil & Filter Changes (every 5K)

Air Filter Cleaning (K&N every 20K or so)

Tire Rotation (every 10K)

and of course just keeping up the fluid levels under the hood.


I've never done anything to my tranny, plugs, transfer case, 4x4 components, diff, or anything else for that matter.

If this was you truck and you were about to hit 80K, what would you be concerned about? I want her to live forever.

nothing its a TOYOTA, its not even broke in yet.

If I were you I'd read the stickys and the maintenance threads and decide if you feel you can handle it yourself or you want to pay a mechanic to do it. If you enjoy doing this type of work yourself give it a try. People on TW will help you thru it if you need help. That's my 2 cents.

 

I was in the same situation with mine, except it was closer to 90,000 miles. Mine is an '06 TRD OR manual tranny. I changed the plugs and all the fluids...transmission, both diffs, and transfer case. Changing the plugs made a noticeable difference. I would say do it all, but that the plugs take priority.

 

I would be concerned about the 30K and 60K services that you missed. Plugs and all your drive train fluids. No rush though, you're only 50K overdue...

Yeah, I'm confident I can handle most of these jobs myself. She runs like a champ, but I guess I let some things slip a little too long.

I haven't touched my brakes (drums, rotors or pads) yet. How long should I expect them to last?

Ok, just finished gathering all my supplies for the truck. I'm hoping to do all the work this weekend.

I got:

Front Diff: Mobil 1

Tranny: Royal Purple

Transfer Case: Mobil 1

Rear Diff: Valvoline Non-synth & LSD Additive

Plugs: Denso (from dealer)

Grease: Mobil 1


Anything I purchased sound like a bad choice? Lemme know now because it's all going in the truck this weekend! Thanks guys, wish me luck.

It all sounds like good stuff. Just 1 question. Why did you get different oil for front, rear, tranny and t-case? I am getting ready to do my rear diff and tranny since I just turned 30K. I am looking to go with Mobil 1 for both since they take the same oil.

Just a reminder if you haven't already gotten these...get the various washers for the drain and fill plugs? I got them from the dealer when I did mine.

I recommend exchangin the Royal Purple's for Redline MT90's instead.

 

Crush washers are not necessary. If you don't have them, don't worry about it. Change them next time if you remember.

I had 185K miles on my '98 Tacoma and currently 94K miles on my 2005. Never bought a crush washer set yet and have never had a problem.

 

Well, I was at Auto Zone, and they only had so much of each brand of oil left. I bought up all the Mobil 1 and still needed 2 more quarts... so I completed my grocery list by picking up 2 quarts of the Royal Purple (twice as expensive!)

Someone here recommended that I return the RP and try to find more Mobil 1... can you elaborate on that a bit more?

And where do you guys buy your Redline Products? No one around here seems to carry it.

And, no, I didn't buy the washers, but I appreciate the advice and will replace them next time.

You're not allowed to say that, lest you be labled by the haters as a blind "fanboy".

 

Only place I know that carries Redline is NAPA. Try them.

 

Ok, well, yesterday I did all the maintanence that was overdue.

- I went with Mobil 1 in front diff, TC and tranny (6spd).

- I used Valvoline non-synth plus a LSD additive in the rear.

- Installed 6 new Desno sparkplugs (checked the dealer-set gaps, they were actually gapped correctly). Talk about getting your fingers into some tight spaces.

- Pumped fresh grease into every zerk I could find.

- Recharged K&N filter (why do they call it rechargeing? more like cleaning and oiling)

She's good to go now. Thanks for all the assistance I received on this thread. Did I forget to do anything?

How does the tranny feel with that oil?
