I think I'm going to just order a muffer. I'm going with Borla though. They have universal mufflers and from what I've found out so far the muffler diameter is 2.5" and the muffler is center/offset. I think the muffler below would work, it's a hell of a lot cheaper too!

I'll look under my truck when I get chance before I order of course.

I tried it with a flow-master, nothing changed.

You'd still need the pipes or figure out a solution because stock is welded to the muffler.

I'm not mechanic, but wouldn't engine mounts vibrate at the RPM when you are sitting parked reving it? Mine doesn't vibrate too much--not as much as others. I'm going to go rev it to the range while parked. Shouldn't someone be able to see my engine start vibrating if its the mounts? I'm not even sure mine vibrates while stopped and reving. I think I tried it a month ago.

So you switched muffler and rear pipes and it was the same? Still buzzing?

Possibly, but under load the engine will be slightly tilted to one direction b/c of the torque twisting it around. So not exactly an apples to apples while parked.

Under load in 1st gear, I do not notice the vibration. It has to be related to how the engine uses Atkinson/Otto and I think it may do something different in 1st such that you don't notice the vibration.

Spoke with a Borla rep via email. I told him I was looking for a mellow sound, not loud, that would not resonate like the OEM muffler. He gave me this:

    ProXS™ Muffler part # 40659

Well for the record I didn't experience the vibration while parked and revving. It was smooth.

I dont know if that helps since you said it might not be enough. I could probably rig my go pro to look at the engine then go drive around. to see if, at highway speeds/under driving condition, it noticeably vibrates.

Since mine isn't too bad, I am not sure its going to be as noticeable.

IMO just changing out a muffler won't do a damn thing. The resonance is through the pipes, mounting points, rubber mounts, and possibly the cat. To really understand if it is the exhaust system, one would need to get a new cat back system and different rubber mounts.

My first thought was to do a cat back but the price is too much. So I'm going the cheap route. Not expecting this will totally solve it but hey its an excuse to buy a muffler!

One thought would be to place the truck on a dyno, let it shift to 5th or 6th gear, get into the RPM range and see, with the hood open, if there's anything vibrating in there more than normally. If nothing significant, remove the exhaust piping working toward the front of the vehicle until the buzzing changes for the better or is eliminated. This may help with narrowing down the problem, or at least eliminate speculation. This is of course the buzzing can be replicated on the dyno.

Around my location in Hawaii, Dyno's run about $100/hour. It may be worth someone's investment to check before jumping on a new exhaust system and it not fix the problem.

I'm in the market to buy the 3rd Gen Tacoma (DC, OR, 4x4) and found this issue. Deciding on whether this makes or breaks my decision.

Regardless, interested to find out the source of this buzzing and hope people's minds can be placed at ease soon.

Can you simulate an incline on the dyno? It's much more noticeable if there is at least a slight incline.

I don't think an incline can be simulated on the dyno. If the buzzing is present at highway cruising speeds, the dyno may simulate that. If it could replicate the buzzing at all, I'm thinking it would at least allow a stationary perspective on any visual vibrations, where it's seen in the tailpipe or the engine bay, or elsewhere.

Of course. Incline is nothing else than load, a proper dyno can do that easily, that's what it is for.

Definitely when some load is involved. Tried and does not have it when highway speeds in neutral or stopped with upward moving rpms evend holding at 2600 rpm. Could be loose honeycomb in cats.

I have a mobius high definition camera. Before I continue further with replacing components, I will position the camera in various areas and see how certain components are reacting under load. I want to absolutely eliminate any grounding issues at major points.

I will do this saturday. I have a couple points in mind, so please if any of you are interested in certain areas, let me know so I can plan where to put the camera/see if it is plausible.

Max operating temperature of the camera may affect points of attachment, I need to double check the data sheet.

I am the guy with the 19291. I have been running it for a little over a week now. Although in my opinion it did reduce the feel of the vibration it did no completely eliminate it. It is very slight at around 2100 rpm. I am OCD and I try to get it to vibe at different rpm and up hills to see if it is just wishful imagination. I do still feel it as I said but I have had a couple friends drive the truck and both told me they never would have noticed if I didn't call attention to it. I had one friend drive it and did not mention it until after the drive and I asked he noticed anything weird. He said it was a good ride. I don't want to be that guy that causes folks to go spend their hard earned money chasing down a fix based on my experience. I wish I lived closer to some of you and could let you take my truck out for a spin and you could judge for yourself.
In my experience it seemed to help. And I have taken some long trips and completely forgot about it. Maybe there is someone else on the Exhaust thread that could relate if they noticed a difference.
