its funny how everyone bashes this trans for unknown reliability, except Toyota made the decision to replace the 750 with this in the new Hilux, land cruiser prado, and their other most successful vehicles. it's also behind 330 foot pounds of torque on a 3.0 diesel set up.

When I was looking for a new truck I was looking at both the Tacoma and the Frontier. I gave up a stick shift 1987 toyota 4x4 for a 2001 Nissan pathfinder in 2004 I drove that till feb 2016 when I bought the Tacoma. I put up the decision between the Frontier and the Tacoma on how well I was treated by the dealers. My experience with my local Nissan dealers and My local Toyota dealer is night and day different. All I wanted was price, delivery date on the truck I specified on the manufactures web site. I told them up front I am paying cash. Not one Nissan dealer would step up to the plate and even give me a quote. Even Toyota was tough but I was totally ignored by the Nissan dealers. So I bought my Tacoma and had to wait 3 months to get it. But the 2001 Nissan 3.5 VQ- 240 hp 4 speed automatic is still a far more refined drive line than my Tacoma. It is the only bummer in this new truck.
Nissan has its own problems but in my experience you get no support at all from their independently owned and operated dealers.

^^^ Never had a Frontier before hand but I held of my Taco purchase just cause I haven't decided between them 100% ...

as for Altima's great short term car, ok for more lease then buy option in my opinion ...
    had couple of these already;
all S models, got them for around 20-22k , all normal every day, city / hwy driven, nothing to spirited and ya I can't say I see these lasting pass 45-60k miles w/o updating.

'09 -- put 30k miles // '13 -- put 33k Miles on it // '16 put 5k Miles on it ( last was a company car, took it from NJ to South Florida for a month and drove it around NJ for a while afterwards)

09 and 13 needed new tires and brakes within 20k ( mostly city driving on them but still kinda to quick) the '16 was a great improvement specially the base seats but omg that paper foam between the window and dash drove me nuts ...

... I will give these Altimas could get awesome gas miles I miss that now that I have a '16 c300.

Last year I bought a 2015 Frontier Pro 4X instead of a 2015 Taco because I didn't want to get a Taco before the big update. The Frontier was fine and you do seem to get more bang for your buck but the Frontier is really kind of dated and very plasticy inside. The "leather" seats are OK but they're really "leather appointed" meaning the only part that's leather is where your butt and back touch the seat - the rest is pleather. Towing a 16' Boston Whaler was horrible with the Frontier.
A month ago I stopped by a Toyota dealer to take a look at the new Taco. The dealer gave me a great trade-in so I ended up trading in the 2015 Pro 4X for a 2016 TRD Sport. So far, I couldn't be happier. For me, the Taco is just a lot more comfortable, drives great (I have a manual transmission so no problems there), and the finishes are just in a whole other league.

Yea they really stepped up the interior on the gen 3, Toyota must have gotten sick of all the criticism on the gen 2 interior. Honestly I like the exterior more on the new ones too, from every angle except the nose haha. It's grown on me though. Biggest thing is getting rid of that chrome grill.

Nissan makes a decent little truck. Have looked at them myself. Definitely a better drive train than the Tacoma 3.5L and 6 speed tranny

Jb, what was horrible about the towing? How does the Taco compare? I tow a large popup camper.

Towing with the Frontier was "jerky" - it just couldn't accelerate with the boat in tow and it felt like you couldn't get up to and maintain speed. I haven't tried towing with the Taco yet (not exactly warm here yet) but will over Memorial Day Weekend.
I would definitely recommend test driving a Frontier with your trailer attached before buying one.

Dealership is going to let you test drive a vehicle while towing something with a new vehicle that hasn't had trans even broken in yet?

A lot of points in this discussion make me think a full size might be the way to go if I do a switch. There a lot of things I like about my Taco I just want to make sure it is the best truck for me.

Did you have a 4 cyl? Can't understand why a 6cyl Frontier would have a problem with a boat that tiny? I towed much larger boats with my Taco and its not as powerful as the 6 cyl Frontier.

I test drove the Frontier along with the 2015 Canyon. I'd take the Canyon over the Frontier in a second, and the Canyon had horrible fit/finish issues.

The Frontier was like driving an empty U-Haul. Worst riding truck ever.

If you hadn't noticed, there are two Tacomas with a 6' bed, and both work great.

You get what you pay for. The Tacoma may cost more up front, but it costs you less as time goes on (unless you mod the shit out of it).
