What was the trailer and load that sucked with your TACOMA? You never gave any information on that.

 

Because what people dont realize is the forum name is not just Tacoma World. If you read the very small print underneath the main title it says "Where Tacoma owners can come and hate on their truck"

 

Ill never understand why people get slammed when they find a tacoma didn't quite meet their needs & go another direction... (as long as they're not being assholes about it..)

 

Because who cares. I dont need to read about someone getting a different car or truck. Just like if Im at a restaurant I dont want someone coming in and saying "Im not eating here any more", and telling everyone what they like better now. Thats great buddy, now GTFO.

And I am going to say that IMHO as the long standing member of that site, (I watched it growth from almost no people to now what it is) the success of this site has been openness to other vehicles. Because I am guessing most of us own more than single vehicle.

Yeah those 1Gen and 2gen trucks are like freaking addiction, once you own one hard to part with it.

It is very rare to have a dedicated car/truck motor, it is a different time than back in the 60's and 70's when you would redesign an entire engine for a type of vehicle. Gone are the days of trucks having 100 ft lbs more tq at 2k rpms than hp. You look at all the truck engines in the big three, all are found and designed to to be in a truck and car/suv. Take the Ecboost, same motor (with some minor changes and tuning) is in the F150 and Taurus (a car). Hemi is in the Ram as their top engine and their sedans. GM's vette shares a good portion of its motor with minimal changes in the full size trucks and suv's.

When a motor is originally designed they have models 5+ years out in what it could go in to, what they need to it do and the numbers they want it to reach. Sorry to say your 3.5 was designed to go in the Tacoma, it is not a 'minivan motor" which just shows how uneducated some people are. An intake change and tune (exhaust is a given) is what most vary between truck and car engines. You won't see heavier rotating assemblies and head changes to increase torque. You might see some lighter valve train for performance models.

Even smaller diesels are (or larger) are designed to go in other cars not just trucks. Cadillac is thinking about the 2.8 in the Colorado to be used in a few of their cars. Gm also uses the D-max in their vans. The ecodiesel in some Maserati cars and the Chrysler 300.

Point is motors are designed to be used in a wide range and have their rpm ranges vary. Today's vehicles rev higher, even diesels rev to 4k+, it is changing, the old way is history...

Uneducated? As soon as the specs for the 3.5L came out, I knew this engine would have no low end and it would be a high revver.

I know Toyota is trying to streamline the same engines on different models. But having a high reving 3.5 liter in a heavy pick-up truck was a stupid decision on their part. Each time someone loads up their bed or tows within their tow rating, the engine will rev high at what cost? People are already reporting poorer mpg when doing such activities than their previous 2nd gen. These engines are fine for minivans and cars, but a truck? No way. Time will eventually tell if these engines can sustain truck use.

 

This. Also if your main priority was towing, why did you get the tacoma in the first place? Not trying to bash the OP, just wondering what you were trying to pull that gave you a bad experience with the tacoma. Either way good luck with the tundra.

 

I completely agree with this statement, but everyone is doing this...look at the other trucks in the midsize truck segment...colorado/canyon and the new ridgeline are all doing the same thing. Even fullsize trucks rev higher. I think the main problem is that the tacoma is heavier than the 2nd generation, they talked about a new frame that was lighter and more rigid with high strength steel, but that means nothing if the truck in general weighs more. Guessing it has to do with all the new tech.
