The oil filter will catch any particle big enough to cause damage. So whatever remains in the oil will be too small to do anything hence you don't need to change the oil.

But regardless, im paying the note on the car and not someone on here, so i personally changed all the oils by 5k. The engine being the first at 2k. It made me feel better despite what i said earlier being true. It's money down the drain but it's my money. So do what you want.

The differentials and if you have a manual transmission are a different case, no filter. So whatever is in there could increase wear if it's big enough. But people run their diffs on the original fluid for 200k with no problems. So at the end of the day its all up to you as to whether you want to be maintenance crazy or not.

Personally, I trust the manufacturer. I change the oil in my Cavalier every 3k miles, as recommended, and plan to stick with the 10k schedule on the truck.

Client of mine has a 2001, used as a work truck. 140k+ miles, I recon, maybe 1 or 2 oil changes (seriously...) For the cost of the new engine, they may as well have changed the oil every 2k miles...

In all of these oil change interval "discussions" no one ever considers the primary factor, the manufacturer expected End Of Life for the engine. MANY years ago when people didn't drive nearly as much as they do today the american Big 3 decided and designed an engine to last for about 100,000 miles. That would get the car to about 10 years old, a point when the interior and body would be used up. At that point the manufacturer felt you should just walk away from the vehicle and buy another. Metallurgy, design technology, available gasket material, lubricants of the era, and so on all were factors. How many members here that are 50+ years old like myself remember their fathers dealing with overheating, bad head gaskets, constant starter and water pump changes, and STP oil treatment. Back then the manufacturer said if you didn't change the oil every 2500 miles or 3 months you would not reach 100,000 miles before a rebuild was needed.

Today, the american Big 3 still follow the 10 year guide for the most part for paint, interior, and body. Most cars over 10 years begin to look old and used up. Plastics do not last. What has changed is how much people drive yearly and the mileage an engine will see in 10 years. That can be 200,000 miles now. So unless one of the 3 wants a blackeye their engines better last 200,000 on average. And to get there synthetic oil should be changed at least every 10,000 miles or sooner depending on conditions and use.

Decades ago and still today if you want the engine to live beyond what the manufacturer thinks is long enough you have to be extra good to it, not JUST good enough. A 10,000 miles oil change is JUST good enough. Personally, I do more than just good enough, for anything and everything in life. And yes, I know many retired engineers from GM and Ford, and one from Chrysler.

Except there is no scientific evidence to back up your assumption that more frequent oil changes are BETTER. It's just a waste of time, money, and oil.
What is BETTER are synthetics that last 15k+ miles without needing to be changed. Reduction of waste and improvement of longevity is where we need to head in the world.

I also don't believe your claims that today cars are only made to last X amount of miles. Except for maybe Chrystler. They make the biggest pieces of shit on the planet.

No assumptions here, just life experience, and knowledge from the men who designed and built cars 50 and 60 years ago and today. How much of that do you have? How far do you push your oil?

You are entitled to believe anything you want, even when someone thinks it's wrong.

Life experience doesn't trump scientific evidence or fact.

I don't push my oil, I change it when it should be changed, and that isn't at 5K miles (I don't use dino in my Taco). If I changed it earlier that would be irrational, not better.
I feel like people should take polluting the world more delicately rather than changing their oil at outdated intervals just because it makes them feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. Just me.

If you use synthetic, changing oil every 5K is a waste.

When did it go to 10k? For the 2016? my 2012 was 5k miles with dino oil.

10k is standard for pretty much all full-synthetics now. The Tacoma just didn't come with it and the 10K change recommendation till 2016.

Do you give any consideration to the nationwide mandated motor oil recycle program? Just asking.

[IMG]Yeah...it's like "wasting" water....it don't get wasted...it just moves on to somewhere else and then gets reused by someone else...

Oil from the ground, if put back in the ground is "recycling", right..??

I really wish our trucks had a system that calculated oil life based on various factors, like a lot of other vehicles do these days. With my truck it either sees highways driving (about 75% of miles) or off-road driving, very limited city driving scenarios and light towing a couple of times each month. Based on the way I use/drive my truck I'll likely push my oil changes out to 7500 mile intervals once the warranty expires, probably doing an oil analysis to see how it looks at that mileage and adjusting from there.

Under no circumstances would I change the oil at anything less than 5000 mile intervals, even if my truck was used to tow on a daily basis. For the guy who changes his oil at 2000 intervals, have you ever spent a couple of dollars to have your 'used' oil analyzed? If so, what did the report have to say?

I didn't want to wait til 10k miles on my first oil change. I paid $60 to have Toyota change the oil at 2,500 miles. Then I will follow the 10k intervals.

I hate how Toyota wash your truck afterwards, I firmly tell them not to. I walked around the back to make sure they are not washing my truck "Because in the past, I told them not to and they wash it anyways". I saw this idiot kid have a brush on a stick. The truck is dry and the idiot is scrubbing the wheels & tires then on to the whole side of the truck in 1 pass. Just spreading dirt around and scratching that truck up. Thanksfully it was not my truck or there woulda been some repercussions.

I felt the same way except one thing. Tacoma engines im finding out are outstandingly reliable. If the engineers say every 10k then they know best. Think about it. Why run the risk of premature engine damage under warranty by telling customer to wait till 10k. And if it’s a money thing then it would make sense for them to suggest every 5 and we’ll cover 20miles then make up the difference on the long haul.

No motor was ever ruined because the oil was changed earlier than specified. 5K is when I change it.

Don't listen to Toyota. 10K oil changes are a ploy to cause early engine failure right after the warranty expires. Change it every 3K.[/DISINFORANT]

Agree, however I think 5k is still safe with the synthetic oil and extra protection oil filter
