    The 3.5 makes 265 ft-lbs at 4600 RPM.

The 4.0 makes 278 ft-lbs at 3700 RPM if you run 91 octane (quoted as base power on TRD's site back when they still made the superchargers).

The 4.0 has a lot of low end grunt--you could realistically keep it under 2000 RPM all the time as long as you don't have any significant hills.

So, "truck use" is harder than "car use"? Interesting. I am guessing you're one of the guys that buys truck specific motor oil.

You don't think the same engine from a 3,500lb car has to work more to move 5,500lb truck, not to mention the 6,500lbs that truck is rated to tow?

Let's not forget about the 4x4 drag and lack of aerodynamics on a truck vs a car.

Have you ever loaded a car with bags of cement to take to the work site? Or used a car to take a small camper up the hills to a camp site? This engine doesn't belong in a truck.

What about the 3.6 in the Colorado/Canyon? Nobody ever really mentions the fact that it's a pretty similar sized engine. Does going from a 3.5 up to a whopping 3.6 make it not a "minivan" engine? How about the fact that Ford puts a 2.7 and a 3.5 in a full size. Granted those are boosted to make up more power, but we are talking about engine sizes here. That seems to be the trend with the people who dislike the 3rd gen. You can even get the 3.5 NON boosted in the f150. Sure the max torque is higher in the RPM range, but so is redline. Everything just moved upwards.

Also, have you seen the size of minivans lately? Check out the Sienna. It's pretty damn large. More aerodynamic sure, but it's still a large vehicle. Almost the size of these trucks.

Oh and OP, lets see that Tundra!! I still wouldn't mind having one whenever I have the need for a full size.

Find me the car that has the exact same engine as the 3.5L Tacoma engine.

So, does "truck use" mean doing something someone who owns a truck door does it mean using an engine within a certain range of it capabilities?

The GM 3.6 makes good torque in the 2000 RPM range. It's not the size of the engine that matters, but where it makes its torque.
The 2GR-FKS that is in the Tacoma is also in the GS350 (<- car), RX350, and Highlander.

Quote: "But having a high reving 3.5 liter in a heavy pick-up truck was a stupid decision on their part."

I went from a 2012 Tundra TRD to a 16' SR5 Tacoma. Do I miss the Tundra? Not really...it was great for towing and the ride was good but low gas mileage and difficulty parking did it in for me (along with hitting a steel mail box). I considered the Tundra a "heavy" truck. The Tacoma...love it so far but it "ain't" a "heavy" truck IMO. Now if they put the 4.6L V8 that was available in my Tundra in the Tacoma....the possibilities would be endless.

I get that as I've had a 2011 as well. What I was saying is that it seems like when people bitch and complain about the engine as it being a "minivan" engine, they are referring to size. Also, the power band was moved up as well as max RPMS. Everything just moved upwards so just rev it a little higher. It's not going to kill it.

The engine designation may be the same but they are not spec'd the same. Both the GS and RX are quoted with higher HP.

True, but just wait. Someone will chime in and say "but the 1st gen is a lighter truck." I've never owed a 1st gen so I'm not too familiar with it, but it does seem like people love it despite the fact it has a smaller, less powerful engine setup.

I liked my 1st gen 3.4L, my 1st gen 2.7L and, my 3rd gen 3.5L. People want to make a big deal about engine size or characteristics but I've yet to read where anyone has had the truck not do what they asked of it. Someone who plans and doing a lot of heavy towing should not buy a Tacoma of any year unless you are willing to accept its limitations in that regard.
