17" TRD PRO wheels and tire sizes?

Hello everyone,

I attempted to search my answer to no avail and had a few questions regarding tire sizes and tire rub on the 3rd gen Tacoma. I'm looking at purchasing the matte black 17" TRD pro rims and have decided on the Cooper ST Maxx tires to accommodate them. I've also been debating on a leveling kit or whether it would be better to just replace all four shocks with Bilstein 5100's. I have a 16 DCSB 4x4 TRD sport with Auto trans. Pretty new to this stuff so please don't be too tough on me, Thank you for your time. Questions listed below.

1. What size Cooper ST Maxx tires are possible to be running on the 17" TRD Pro rims as well as the recommended size? I do not want the tires to stick out the sides of the fenders. Is there any additional parts (spacers?) that I will need to complete the setup?

2. Leveling kit vs a four shock replacement with Bilstein 5100's? I appreciate the leveling kit look.

I'd go with 265/70/17 tires and for BillStien 5100s set at the Second notch from the bottom. I would also replace the rear shocks with the 5100s

 

I see a lot of members running 275/70/17 on the PRO 17's.
You care about looks?- leveling kit
You care about ride quality? 5100's

 

Im wanting to get the TRD Pro wheels as well. I currently have the Sport alloys and I want to get the Toyota brand TRD Pro wheels that are 17x7 (used for the 4Runner), and use the stock 265/65 R17 tires. The stock wheels are 17x7.5.

Im wondering:
a) Are the offsets different between the sport rim and the Toyota TRD Pro rim?

b) Will the 0.5" narrower width rim of the TRD wheel make a difference? I dont think it will.

 

I'm almost positive that your stock wheels are 7" wide, the same as the TRD Pro's

 

Just curious as to whether you pulled the trigger on this as I'm wanting to do the same

 

Ok... to help my two friends above. I am a newbie as well and I went with the TRD Matte Black. I did 265/70/17 to guarantee no rubbing. I also went with a C rated tire (BFG KO2) as to not ride as rough. I could not be happier. Member Unchained5150 helped a ton, so I owe him a huge thanks. Here is a picture of my setup.

 

265/70/17 Goodyear Adventures. They do not stick out beyond wheel well at all. Blisteins all around fronts set at .85 using rokblokz flaps. I did have a little rub on inside when in reverse and turning full with the husky flaps so replaced with rokblokz. Had an alignment done after the install to make sure it all lined up correct. Very happy with the set up. I also put Sumos springs in the rear. Gave a 5/8 " lift to the back but more so to prevent sag as I tow a 19' sport boat loaded with equipment. The blisteins up front settle a bit lower after around 1000 miles. I think the truck sits perfect level. You do not need any spacers. The TRD wheels have a built in offset that gives a wider stance but does not cause the tires to extend past the fenders. Good luck with your truck. Love mine.

 

Not yet, just posted that yesterday. But it looks like Im going to go for it based on below post. I just bought some all-pro sliders, so Ill need to let my wallet recover a bit before dropping another $7-800 on wheels.

Do yourself a favor. Go to the main Gen3 page and you will find a listing for all Unchained5150 deals. One is those TRD wheels I believe for $700 shipped. Not going to get any lower for those original OEM.

 

Just ordered the 17" TRD Pro's. Due to the offset would it be possible to run 255/75/17 without lift? According to tirerack only .5" taller than the 265/70/17, but about $50 cheaper per tire.

 

Just got mine put on yesterday no lift and 265/65r17

 

The stock sport wheels are 7.5"

 

Im running the TRD wheels on Yokohama Geolander AT 285/70/17 with the ProComp Nitro leveling kit. No rub no trimming.



My tire shop told me not to go with 275. Its a crap size tire he told me.

My wheels are coming and i've been researching tires. I'm 100% on road guy (bought truck for family and motorcycle hauling)

How are the K02s on road? I like the stock sport tires on road handling (toyos)

 

The Toyos despite people bashing them, and I myself who had a set that crapped out early on my Nissan Murano, did feel that the ride was nice and smooth. The KO2s are definitely a different ride, got the C rated, but they are very nice albeit firm as compared to the Toyos. Will take a little bit to get used to, especially if you put a lot of drive time on the Toyos. Have had mine for over a month now and love them. Definitely feel safer than Toyos on snow/heavy rain. Also, feel confident that will last 50K miles at least. Last Toyos went 27.5K and were bald.
