lol, I actually did just get my ticket. but I also work in IT at a gov't institution so the policy considerations always come out, aka I deal w/ a lot of cya types.

But technically the problem isn't so much about you id'ing when you're transmitting from your HT, but the issue is when your repeater is repeating incoming stuff, this is where the requirement comes from because your repeater is acting automatically and solo.

Imagine this situation. You're in a well, you have a TM-V71A on crossband repeat at the top of the well. Besides the ISS, nobody will be in your LOS or even have a chance of receiving your transmission while you're transmitting. However, your xband repeater will be in the open broadcasting to anyone who can hear. While in simplex at the top of the well, your transmission is received by the repeater and broadcast on another band, people around the repeater won't be able to hear your station identification unless they were monitoring the Bravo Frequency.

There are other situations too where you're transmitting besides voice modulation.

For example, I plan on using other digital models like psk31 on crossband repeat. It is unreasonable to expect me to unhook my HT from my laptop so I can call out my ID on my Alpha Frequency.

However, I would concede that Kenwood can "modify" this behavior of their xband repeatable transceivers. The ideal solution is that it would transmit the ID via cw or voice but when there's a period of inactivity, stop broadcasting until traffic is received again. It makes no sense to send out an automated station ID for a short term setup except during times of use. Different of course for static repeaters though, since their operation is expected and setup for a band plan for a specific region.

    Yes.
Honestly, all three of those radios are effectively the same. It's like comparing an F-150, a Silverado 1500, and a Ram 1500. Sure there are differences, but they're all have the same core set of features.

TL:DR "It's hard to go wrong with any of those three radios" :)

she does.... KC9QKY and thanks! There's a speaker under the passenger seat, that fires up between the seat and the door.

    Yes.
Mine's not quite as clean, but it's got a lot more gear as well.

All the cables run under the carpet, or kick panels though which is nice.
APRS is in the box under the rear seat (Access Cab)
The IC-706 body is under the driver's seat, with an LDG Z100 auto-tuner
The TM-D700 body is under the passenger's seat.

I really enjoy seeing install pics of peoples dashes. After my last big road trip, I vowed to update and better mount my electronics.

So.. Five and a half months later, :D I am about to go hog wild and get serious about mounting my electronics on the dash. I have some RAM mounts on the way.

I think I am going to screw then directly into the stock JBL radio. lol There is some space up there above the CD slot. I am thinking two RAM ball mounts up there. Plus RAM makes magnet mounts, and that sounds like a win if they work off road.

    My accessories are:
    • Nexus 5 phone which uses a suction mount in the left corner glass and works well.. No plans to change it.
    • Nexus 7 tablet which I want to mount in a vertical position.
    • Garmin device.
    • Remote head for VHF/UFH radio 1
    • Remote head for VHF/UFH radio 2
    • Remote head for HF
    • Uniden Scanner. This might be a pain in the ass as they don't make remote heads for their stuff anymore...
I've been considering getting a tech deck for the remote radio heads.

    Yes.
I think I'll be picking up a Tech Deck at some point and re-configure how all the things are mounted in my truck.

The IC-706MKIIg is staying where it's at though. I like that I can slowly turn the dial while leaving my arm on the arm rest, and I don't have to lean forward to interact with the radio.

I keep trying to get her to, but she is working on her Master's degree right now, so maybe after that.

KX2 is nice, but KX3 would be the route id take for portable and mobile.... 857d i was never a fan of.... my previous Mobile/back up base was a ts-480 HX. Current base is first gen K3 with 100w

Let's say 80% mobile, 15% portable, and 5% base station.

The only difference between the KX2 & KX3, that I can see, is the KX3 can do 160m and about $300. Can you tell me why you like it so much?

Why no love for the 857D?

I played with the KX3 at a ham picnic one day, very cool little radio. The KX2 was just released.
