And the top end was a complaint of the previous gen, they gave us that with the same Tq numbers granted they are at a higher rpm but it makes it really fun off-road

What kind of off-roading? I personally don't want to have to hit 6k RPM to find torque while I'm crawling around trail debris and rocks at 5 MPH.

I've done plenty of rock crawling and it does it with ease. This is still a v6. Like any truck it has to do with gearing not power. It makes trails and desert runs pretty fun.

I'm currently on my fourth 4 liter. Maybe I'm just way too used to the way that engine drives. Maybe the new one is better in every way. It's just a big risk if it turns out I hate it.

It was really difficult to find my Nautical Blue 4Runner SR5 Premium. If I gave it up for a Tacoma and it turns out I hate the 3.5 liter, that is really going to suck.

I was not going to post anything, but I just read this and fell off the chair.
If you revving engine in woods? I think I speak for many offroaders here that you will get kick your shit out of the trail before Rangers show up.
Retarded approach like that gets our trails closed.

You want to rev your little engine? Stick it in your wife

i guarantee that there isn't a 2nd gen here that will hold 5th gear on a slight uphill at 75mph. The 4.0 was torquey but that's all it was and it wasn't even amazing at it. They were able to squeeze out how much more power and with same Tq numbers and with smaller displacement in a slightly heavier truck and still get more mpg's... Some of you guys are crazy

See if your dealer can get you a manual, or hit the ETC button as it actually does make a difference with the low end "issue" people seem to have. I don't have a problem with mine but it seems to be a concern to others. Have you considered to just have someone go up there as a test subject since you aren't really too pleased with it? I don't see Toyota changing the combo setup for a while so if you aren't happy with it, maybe you should just have someone else do the test fitting for you.

Not too much difference in Hp bc at 5200 I'm willing to bet the 3.5 is already making more then 236hp but keeps going, doesn't just die like the 4 liter

I drove a manual, and felt it was worse than the auto. Because the engine has no tractability, you have to shift ALL THE TIME. Since this is a truck, and it basically shifts like a bus, there is no way I would live with that.

Eventually I'm going to have to bite the bullet anyway. In my line of work it's critical to have the truck in my driveway full time for measuring and testing. Maybe TRD will release a supercharger for it. If they do, I'll be all over it like stink on a monkey.

In all seriousness though, it doesn't appear that you will be too happy with it. It works for some, but not everyone. It works just fine for my everyday driving, towing my 2100lb popup, and driving the trails in the mountains. It may not work for you. It seems pretty obvious that you weren't pleased with test driving it but are looking for a reason to get it anyway just to be let down.

I'm looking for a reason to get it because I love everything about it, except the engine (and I need one for business).

But maybe it will improve as it learns my driving habits....

And maybe a Magnaflow catback will help just enough.

I'm definitely not shitting on the truck. I think they knocked it out of the park with the styling, and damn I want one, but I gotta make sure that engine isn't going to a disappointment in the long haul.

Hopefully I can report back in 6 months and say that the 3.5 is the god of all engines.

I hope you'll be happy with it. I'm happy that I traded my 2011 for this one. There are perks/cons to both of them honestly. You just have to learn to adjust to the way this gen drives. People don't want to learn/adjust/change/give it a chance or anything. Toyota has to please the majority as a whole including new and future government regulations. I'm not making excuses for what they did, but you have to consider that part as well as to why they wanted to keep the low end a little more eco for city driving. If people stopped having to get from one block to the next in .2 seconds, it would meet the rated mpg. Plenty of people up here have no problems with how it drives. If you can afford it, hang onto your runner for a few months while having the Tacoma as well. See if it'll meet your needs. If the runner had better towing, I would have jumped all over one of those because I like the styling. The Tacoma just met my needs better.

    Yeah retarded, ....
Idiots who think they can rev their little POS engines in woods are the reason the rest of us has gets kicked out from trails and why state close them. If you need more than 2000 RPM on the trail than you should check your batteries in your Barbie powerwheels.
High reeving scares the animals, (pisses hunters, and greenies) and sends plums of shit the woods.
I am going to Quote U.S. Forestry here
    http://www.fs.fed.us/lei/motorized-use.php
And again... you want to rev shit better be in your wife V...a
