Driving the AT now few days, it's not so bad. I don't live somewhere with a bunch of hills, but for me it seems to do just fine with shifting (common complaint from others). I've run it in ECT on and off, and with ECT on it basically seems to keep the rpm higher and lock in gears longer. It's a little more responsive driving around with ECT on, but it really doesn't have the same connected feeling as the MT does. The MT just responds better to the throttle, but you still do need to keep RPM up. If you're below 2000rpm with the manual you'll be going nowhere until rpm get up, and it's the same with the AT. The AT just downshifts and gets up into the power as needed. I find myself using a lot more of the RPMs with the AT, but that is probably just because the MT is easier to control rpm being used.

If they only offered the AT I would be okay with it. Drives fine and gets around with no problem. Since they offer a MT, and since I prefer the way this MT drives (some manuals in trucks are really atrocious, see Dodge 2500 or Nissan Frontier), I don't have any regrets with the choice.

Motor and trannys are fine, work good, untrainable operators seem the issue. If ya want a truck to act like gen one, buy one and quit whinin'.

Ford might bring their mini diesels whenever the Ranger is back.

Toyota is too caught up with hybrids and fuel cells.

Mercedes teamed up with Nissan for their new truck, would be awesome if they had the diesel from the Sprinters.

Just test drove this little betty. She purrs real nice and has torque for days. Very smooth shifting and power band more pleasing than the high end plateau and downshift happy 3.5L and 6 speed auto. Power seats with height adjustment felt more comfortable than my tacoma. Downside was interior felt roomier but not as solid as tacoma. Also front approach angle borders on useless. Need to look at what it would take to make it more capable there. Love love love me some diesel though.

Other pros: exhaust brake. Trailer controls come stock.

Don't give up on a manual Tacoma. When you do test one, come prepared with a pen because you will be signing papers after the test drive.
