Hey all! I just bought a 2012 4banger PreRunner Access Cab after trading in my 2008 Mazda 3 with 159,000 miles on it. I had an aftermarket speaker system installed (by splicing into the factory amp) which consisted of 2 component 6.5"s up front, 2 coax 6.5"s in the back, and a 12" sub in the hatch. The PreRunner's factory sound is horrendous and I fully plan on installing my former system in it. However I am saddened to find that my access doors contain no open speaker grill, though I have read and seen a couple people who have modified it. Where might I find the speaker grills to place in the doors while not making the whole thing look gaudy? Also I have a strong desire for a sub in the cab but the dilemma I am facing is that I want to keep the full intended functionality of the seats but do not want spend a fortune on a stealth sub. Any advice or tips?

Sorry if this is already discussed in several threads already; reading through all of them can be daunting.

I have seen boxes that fit between the rear seats of an access cab. Most are down or up firing. Also your speakers may need more power to sound good. Im sure the factory amp is not pushing much to the speakers.
Look up @Mrmarv, he is a good guy and will offer help with designing a setup for your truck.

Thanks! I do have a 75x4 stereo amp and a 1400x1 mono amp that I had powering the speakers and intend on using after I install a double din receiver.

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
When I had my 2nd gen AC I ended up putting a JL Audio Stealhbox in. It fills in/replaces your center cargo bubby. It is back firing and takes no room away from the cab. It sounds really good. I coupled that with some nice high-end Alpine component woofers and tweeters up front with a "fit kit" from Crutchfield. In the back doors I put some decent (middle of the road/value) three-way 6x9s. Ran it all through a 5 channel amp (I used the Alpine PDX). Anyway, the takeaways I learned.

    • Run new thicker speaker wire to everything don't use the stock wires.
    • Don't use the crossovers on the component speakers, let the amp handle the cross over settings.
    • The back door speakers don't change the sound quality at all, but do "fill in" the space so they are needed but don't have to be that good.
    • The sub was smaller then I thought I wanted but it exploded in that small cab and sounded fantastic. I never ran out of bass.
    • The deck doesn't really matter for sound quality so much, not nearly as much as a good pair of tweeters, spend all your money on the tweeters.
Have fun. Crutchfield is a great website to explore and put together your system, and their 1-800 number is also fantastic and you can and will call them during the install for help. It's all included.

I feel that a headunit with a good EQ will help out alot. There are some that have more features than others. I am keeping my stock Headunit so i will be purchasing a Digital sound processor. This will also allow me to tweak my front stage!

Make sure what ever door speakers you go with meet those specks or they will not sound as good as their potential.

Also that 1400w maybe peak watts and not rms so make sure your sub will work. But you said you already had a sub so you should be good.

Looks like I will be cutting out a hole large enough for my coax 6.5"s in the interior access doors and use OEM speaker grilles (as found in older Camrys). Pics here (note, I have yet to do this, the 'finished' pic is one found in several threads here):

    As it looks now:

Close to what I want it to look like:

Speaker grills I will be using (or thinking about using):

I did an amp under each seat, components up front, tweeters in stock location & nothing in the rear suicide doors, I'm of the school of thought that music is best enjoyed in stereo, not surround. I built a box that is like a center console for the rear seats, mine is an 05 so the rear seats are a little different. I can still have passengers in back no problem, well as far as an access cab goes its no prob lol. Here's my seat massager, check out the subwoofer thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/show-off-your-custom-subwoofer-boxes.356833/

You can also get rear door panels from an earlier model that have the speaker grills.

I know my old 2008 had speakers in the rear access doors with the correct style panels with speaker grills, not sure what year they stopped putting the speakers back there.
