I am still on my original from 2008. I have a smallish crack in the top passenger side and some small chips but nothing major. I plan on getting a new one soon though. I guess I have just been lucky so far.

It's easy to give adequate space when there are like 12 other people in your state. ;)

Just cracked mine today. It went from a tiny knick to a giant line in a minute. Thought it was just bad luck until I read all the reviews! Hoping for warranty covera20160520_190025.jpg ge

Anyone having issues like this/mine should call it in to Toyota Corp; I did and they claimed it was the first time they had heard of a problem. If more people called them in, the might eventually do something to it down the road (like maybe by the 5th gens lol)

I'm not waiting until then. I just printed out all the complaints from across the internet and I'm taking it to the dealer first thing in the morning. I will also file a complaint with corporate and whatever entity governs the regulations for auto safety. This is my 3rd Tacoma and I love these trucks but there's a standard we all expect or I'd have gone with a Chevy.. ehhh NOT!

Best of luck (seriously). Let us know what kind of response you get.

Changed mine out due to a hard hit by a rock truck last week. My first replacement windshield since it was new in December 2009. What is amazing is that work close to 3 huge gravel pits with hundreds of belly dumpers, side dumpers, and regular dump trucks spilling rocks all over the freeway all day long. I had probably 8 dings that were fixed in my old windshield. Finally got hit hard on the bottom right on a hot day then drove into a micro-burst rainstorm which cooled it down and an 18 inch crack developed. I think the factory glass is tough. In my dozens of replacement windshields over my life I have found there are companies that sell thin glass and thick glass. Make sure you get a company the meets or beats OEM specs. My recommended windshields are from Safelite and GlassUSA.

The glass on '16 is actually thicker for noise reduction. However, for aerodynamics the windshield is a bit forward on the bottom side. Essentially, this creates a larger surface area. More surface area, more susceptible to breaks.

Do the companies dumping rocks in the road pay for the glass?

The new tactic is you put a sign on the back of the trucks saying that they are not responsible for damage if you are closer than 100 feet and can read this sign. Most of my hits have been form rocks they dump all over the freeway and another vehicle picks it up and throws it at you. For all I know I've busted someone's windshield.

I ended up just having it replaced by safelite auto glass. They charged me about 450 for the new one and I had them take the original go pro mount off of the windshield and glue it back on the new one. It's the exact same windshield made by Pilkington. I got nowhere with Toyota. They said it wouldn't be covered because it was an impact crack. If they are ever recalled I'll be reimbursed but I guess it was just bad luck. Since then I have been hit with a few rocks and so far there is no damage to the new one! I also got my comprehensive insurance coverage increased so I don't have to pay 450 again. The dealer tried to tell me there were no aftermarket replacements available yet and the OEM glass would be around 900.

A duck hit my windshield while I was going 75 last week and the windshield did not crack and the low flying duck just kept going

I was told the glass is thinner to save weight.

The glass is actually thicker and thinner at the same time. It changes with the temperature. Lol

My '16 took a nasty rock this morning, one of those large pebbles you can see bouncing along then at the last moment pops up.

Just a slight half-moon chip was the result. Considering the fairly upright angle of the glass, that's above average windshield durability in my book.

I had a 2009 that I've driven the same 80 mile route for 6 years. Never had a crack. I got a new 2016 Tacoma, and now I'm about to get my 4th windshield in less than a year and a half. Yes they are getting nailed by pebbles, but I drive the 285 loop around Atlanta. The 2009 got hit all the time, there might have been some minor chips, but nothing noticeable. Every time I've gotten a chip with the 2016, no matter how small, it resulted in a crack. I'm about to give up on this truck and trade it in on anything but a Toyota. I'm really done with it. I can't afford to keep paying the deductibles on these things.
