I do expect, no matter what, for it to be there slightly after it is fixed. I have seen many people say that theirs is so slight but they hardly notice it. For me and many others it is currently impossible not to notice. I don't mind testing out a new exhaust, but I will still investigate a little further before putting that amount of money into it.

So, before you replaced the exhaust how would you describe the vibration, since no after, it is only slight? Was it very strong, manageable, like a cell phone vibrating in your hand/feet? Or was it kind of minor all along?

Before it was on scale of 1-10 a 6-7. Now more of a 3. Also the gas pedal vibration went from a 7 to a 1. The steering wheel is noticeable as a 3 if my hand is at the 12 o'clock position anywhere else it's a 1.

Thank you, that makes me feel better about it. I would agree my "pre measurements" are in the same ball park.

I would also agree the steering wheel vibration is the worst at 12 o clock and is a close second at 6 o clock

Same here.. Steering wheel hand position matters.

I Really think it is the upper exhaust that connects to the manifold.. Changing the cat back can definitely help it but it won't completely eliminate it.. If I try it, I am going to go with as large(most replacement) as a system as possible. Maybe even see what is out there as far as in line resonators.

    Aero90, keep us updated!

If anyone is in the Charlotte NC area and wants to help troubleshoot, I be glad to spend a day trying more things..

Has anyone tried adding a helmholtz resonator yet? That seems to be a reasonable thing to try. Has anyone put it on a Dyno yet?

I've looked quite a bit into a helmholtz resonator. And I've decided to try it out once work get a bit less busy. Heading towards a deadline late next week.

This is quite interesting...thanks for checking into that.

I noticed the right side pipe appears to have a small resonator (less than a foot long) right after the cat. The left side doesn't appear to have this resonator. The odd thing is the right side has a ball joint before the Y pipe. The left, and much longer side, doesn't have the ball joint. I also find it curious that it's quite a distance before the left and right side meet at the Y pipe. It makes me think that the drone and vibration were very much intentional design features.

So I velcro'd a camera underneath pointed towards the back and went for a drive. Its nothing worth posting, didn't see anything out of the ordinary (although the exhaust does seem to have a funny sort of vibration mode when the truck comes to a complete stop).

    However, two things.

    1. I decided I would take a chance and I ordered a cat-back system based on Blazingblue's experience. I didn't go with magnaflow though, I decided to try out Borla (since they are known for remaining extremely quiet in the cabin and having no drone. Plus I haven't seen anyone use this yet on the 2016 here so if I'm going to be a guinea pig for one thing, might as well make it two). The part # is 140680. So if anyone was considering testing out the cat-back theory, might as well wait until I have some results in a few weeks.

    2. I noticed there is a pretty tight clearance, one that is bordering on too close, between the exhaust and frame in two places. This is at the cross frame member where the Y-pipe ends AND at the cross frame member where the pipe enters the muffler. I have maybe 0.5" at best (cold) of clearance, maybe even less near the muffler entrance. Is it possible that Blazingblue's cat-back system opened up this clearance? Is it possible that a run of stock "cat-backs" had out of tolerance pipe bends or final welds that pulls the exhaust too close to the frame? I don't know, others would have to check theirs as well. I saw a general guideline of keeping 0.75" minimum between frame/body and exhaust pipes and this definitely doesn't meet that. Somebody else though, viber and non-viber would have to check (it would be great if we could get a couple volunteers, only takes 2 minutes at most). I would put a camera there to check during operation, but the good spot to put it is too close to the exhaust for comfort. I don't particularly want to melt my brand new camera.

Stay tuned for updates on the exhaust....

And a little off topic, I know we are all bummed out about this issue, but I was able to get the truck off road last weekend in the desert. Man, it performed great. If you are feeling bummed, try to get off road on some nice trails. Hang in there and re-kindle the love a bit until we can figure this out.

I think it was when doobiwahs engineers came out, they said the new exhaust was rigidly mounted to the engine and that might be it...

I love driving mine around town and was impressed with it on my un-plowed fire roads in the heavy snow this last winter.....I almost decide I love it until I take a quick trip down the freeway....and my hands remind me why I can't drive it any distance without them going numb....

I just had my winter tires swapped out and the guys at the tire store were all standing around the truck, oohing and aahhing...then the senior tech turned and looked at me and asked why, since I'd owned it for 8 months did I only have 3400 miles on it (they know my other vehicle has almost 60k in 3 years...)? When I told them, he looked at me and said: "But, Toyota's don't have those kind of problems. The Tacoma is virtually bullet-proof." I just smiled, bought the guys a box of donuts, and left quietly.

Amen brother. In July I'm towing a camper from Cincinnati and setting up a base outside Silverton Colorado and I'm taking this killer truck off road for several days. Cant wait! \m/

Well I have the 20-15 washboard rumble now on top of the tickler tacoma. Put with on bilstien at .85 with the 1/4 inch spacers to keep at 1.5 lift. It did alleviate all alignment issues but now a rumble on top of the vibe. About ready to say the hell with toyota and go American after 3 tacomas. Never had this many problems with fords.

I feel ya. I've had several used cars I've purchased at 120k+ miles that haven't had this many issues.

Make sure you file a complaint with corporate and take it to a dealership to have them document it.

When did exhaust vibrations become the prevailing hypothesis on this issue?

When no one else knew for sure! Everyone's sorta speculating. The vibrations TO ME felt like resonance from the exhaust system in my truck. So I decided on my truck I'd start small. Do I know if it'll fix the problem...nope! Do I have $90 to see...Yep!

Cool! Carry-on then. I didn't know if someone had heard a rumor from Toyota or something that I missed.

Cool, I don't know if you saw, but I just ordered the whole Borla cat-back system. It will take a couple weeks for me to get it though. You'll have to post updates, are you going to have a shop chop the stock pipes or run new ones?

Well to be honest, JQ3 started talking about exhaust and Blazingblue said he got a new cat-back system and it dramatically reduced vibrations, and then I was like "well, who needs $600" so I ordered a cat-back system as well and thats how it has spiraled towards exhaust. So in a couple weeks between JQ3, Blazingblue and I, the rear portion of the exhaust will either be ruled out or confirmed to be the issue. Although we'll have one Magnaflow cat-back, one Borla muffler, and one Borla cat-back data point. I should note the Magnaflow uses a 3" pipe setup while Borla stays with 2.5".
