Cedar siding is what we have and we purchased the house with someone having used a tinted stain on the cedar, the time has come to re apply.

With the plethora of knowledge on this forum I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I'm getting multiple quotes and Elastomeric paint has come up a couple of times and so has Shark Skin (Cloverdale Paint).

What should I be using on Cedar siding? I'm told Elastomeric is meant for stucco and chimneys and that the Shark Skin product is the way to go.

Also, what's everyones opinion on painting gutters, soffits and down pipes?

ANY help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance folks.

I have cedar siding on our house and I have been taught to stain cedar never paint. Maybe that school of thought has changed but cedar needs to breath and paint will not allow that. Stain the cedar imo.

X2 ! Stain for Lap cedar siding. Painting of Soffits, gutters & downspouts is ok , make sure to use the correct type paint for the materials. Ex: aluminum paint for aluminum soffits ,gutters ,downspouts, etc.

Best treatment I found for cedar siding was: typar paper and vinyl siding. Warmer in winter, cooler in summer, and no more staining!:frusty:

That might not be in the budget for the OP, I do agree if I had to build my house again I would use vinyl in the cut of cedar. The cedar used today is all young growth trees and does not weather well.

Too true. Seems to be the case for most of the lumbar used to build homes today. The house was built in 1986 so I'm hoping the Cedar was of better quality in the 80's then it is today. I just built a good neighbour fence made of Cedar and just about walked out of the lumber store in frustration when I had to spend almost an hour just sorting through to find straight decent boards.

I'm not sure what it would cost to re side our home in vinyl but we won't be here long enough to offset the cost. Like Kevin said though, if I was building a home today it would use vinyl siding and not Cedar. I would also use metal and not 2X4s for the framing.
