newb wants some beefy tires- with exception

i searched but can't seem to find one definitive thread on it, and i'd be glad to hear a range of opinions.
for my 2wd 08 reg cab tacoma, i'd like some slightly beefier tires than these whisper thin stock ones.
however, i'm not in a position to lift or even change rims at the moment- strictly just changing tires. my basic rims are fine, IMO

as far as chunky, knobby or off-road tires go, i think i'll know what i want when i see it.

any suggestions on what i can get with a stock setup without breaking the bank? bst fit? biggest possible?

links or pics to the specific tires would be appreciated. but don't break your back for me, i'm not expecting a handout...just if you have a minute with nothing to do and an experienced or strong opinion on the matter.

the extent of my off roading will most likely be dirt and gravel roads and alleys as i go scavanging. just want to look more intimidating and not trap gravel, glass or nails in my skinny treads afterwards, like i do now.

I really like the nitto terra grapplers. A nice offroad look with good performance, mileage, and little road noise.

 

Are you 5 lug?

 

I second the Terra Grapplers...that's what I have on my 08 TRD Sport 4x4. Aggressive looking tire and definitely has low road noise. Click on my gallery to check them out on my Taco.

 

most tires will have a wheel width requirement. don't know what the width of the 5 lugs are. that will determine how wide you can go.

 

thanks so far!- yeah i know keeping the 5 lug rims limits my width. another mod for another day, i guess.

 

I have 31x10.5 15s on my five lugger and they don't rub at all when I turn. I don't have any kind of lift yet but I do have aftermarket 15x8 wheels, btw 15" tires are the easiest to come by
