Everything you listed is a diesel. There has never been a large displacement turbo gasoline v8 offered in a normal vehicles (not luxury cars or sports cars)

Ford is supposed to be putting a twin turbo v8 (5.0 I believe) in the new raptor, while yes it is a "performance vehicle" we all know that the technology will trickle down to "regular" vehicles eventually.

 

Mercedes has used turbo v8's and v12's in SUV's. But they also cost 100k+

That's the current ecoboost in the standard f150 and expedition (and I believe an option for a few other vehicles) with maybe a different tune.

I don't think Toyota will go that route. Toyota makes vehicles that are cheap and reliable. They already went the turbo route in the 80's. (22ret 3sgte, 7mgte, 2/1 jzgte). If there is another gasoline turbo motor put into a suv/midsize truck, I think it will be along the lines of a 3rz turbo direct injection, but that's just me.
I think most people ooh and aahh over a turbocharged motor until they own and mod one. Boost leaks, vacuum leaks, head gaskets blowing, etc... They aren't too appealing to the normal Toyota consumer. I've owned a few turbo cars, and the Tacoma is my first supercharged vehicle. Although it isn't as effeiceint, it does have its benefits and suits the truck just fine.

 

I think supercharger be easier and less parts. It be a tight squeeze to fit a turbo on each side of the V6. I would like to run 5 psi.

 

Mpg isn't great. I've had many customers come in with better mpg on there 5.0L's then I get on my ecoboost

 

I was getting sub-10mpg on my daily commute driving like a grandma in my 2016 ecoboost rental truck.

 

I average 22 highway and 17.3 city in a 2015 expedition EL with the ecoboost (6K lbs), I don't really baby it either.

 

If they are able to get similar numbers as Ford does with their 3.5 ecoboost, it won't be a step backwards. A turbo on the 5.7 would be awesome, but you won't see it. Toyota has to get their mpg's up in order to meet the new standards. They are either going to have to go with a smaller turbo motor or a hybrid in their next generation. I don't know if this otto/atkinson motor on the Tacoma would cut it on a full size truck that needs the low end grunt.

 

I've seen a lot of disparity with the ecoboosts, its seems like people are either averaging 22mpg or they are getting 15.

 

2.7 eco engines are more consistent. I have to give this to ford pushing 325 hp out of that little motor on a full size.

 

Turbo 4.0 v6 with direct injection and a 6 or 8spd trans to go with it.

 

I am still trying to get over that there is a Mazda engine in my Tacoma! Why did Toyota Do this?!

My 2016 was making more noise then my 2009. So I took it in to the dealer and had a mechanic looked at and he said we are still trying to figure out these Mazda's engine's. I said the same thing. What are you talking about? He told me that the Tacoma's are using Mazda engines and same with the Yaris. I said they could have the truck back. They thought I was kidding. Was not happy to find that out!
