2.7L-Specific Aftermarket Stuff

Hello everyone,

Most of the threads on here are obviously V6 based.
Let's build a place to centralize all the stuff people like to fiddle with on the 2.7L...

It's a subtle change, but it does sound a little better. I'm not going to lie and say it improved mpgs or acceleration, etc. I did the mod around 1,500 miles so I didn't really know my baseline yet.


5Spd URD Short Shift... I haven't seen anyone put this on a 3rd gen yet though? Guys in the 2nd Gen section seem to like it. And it looks relatively simple to do. Anyone with experience?

Agreed. Washable element filters are the reason for many engine failures due to dust ingestion. My 2.7 has premature ring wear due to it but compression is still within Toyota spec. Oil control rings are probably not still in spec though. Over a quart of oil loss every 1000 miles.

 

As far as I understand it, the single best mod you can do to the 2.7 is get a set of the LCE headers. $450 gets you a much lower torque peak and a nice gain in HP and Torque to boot.

Anything else, short of supercharging, is essentially a waste of money. Like less than 1HP per $100 spent.

I plan on grabbing one soon, and if it turns out well enough I think it will be my only power mod. These 4 cylinders aren't race winners, they're long-haulers that go hundreds of thousands of miles.

I was looking at the K&N air intake or 2.7 since my father in law swears by his (in his 07 Tacoma) but have heard from others theyre hard on engines.

 

Can someone provide more information (i.e. links) on the damage these washable K&N filters cause to engines?

I bought one mainly because it was cheaper in the long run as compared to regular filters. I did not notice any mpg or hp gains. This was about 50,000 kms ago on my 2nd gen and wash it often/take care of it.

If these are sh!t then I'll go back to a regular filter.

 

Well, most folks on this forum will attest they effect your MAF more than anything. The oil collects on the sensor, which then, collect dirt and grime.

Generally low dust environments have less of a negative effect than obviously the latter.

Also, KN filters are know for allowing a lot of air through and a list of extra stuff too, most of this will burn up in combustion, but over time it will collect. You might be the one guy who never sees a problem, and then again you can be the one who becomes the statistic.

For your request of the link(s), there are so many I've read on here and otherwise, I'd fill up 10 pages on this thread.

TL;DR it makes almost no flow difference and K&N lets more crap through.

Also, bear in mind that at least with the stock 2.7 airbox, there is also that secondary charcoal filter. So you pay $50 for a shiny new panel filter that immediately flows into the same restriction as before.

The MAF should never be an issue unless you absolutely murder that SOB with way more oil than you need.

 

Can we please not turn this into a K&N vs OE filter debate.
There's millions of threads like that on the internet.
It doesn't need to be 3rd Gen Taco 2.7L specific, that debate applies to every motor.

There is no all in one thread for the 2.7 because it is far too large of an info source to try and keep it in one tiny area, and everything asked here has been answered hundreds of times over in the correct area.

The 2.7 is not 2016 specific, check out the 4 cylinder section of TW.

 

Other than dual vvti in the 2016 4cyl, they're the same engine.

So anything that fits the 2005-2015 4cyl will fit the 2016- 4cyl. Thats why he posted the link to the "old" 2.7...cause it's the same fuckin thing.

Now, granted, these tests weren't done using a 2.7 intake, so the magical pixie dust Toyota puts in their trucks might make the filter better than bench testing.

Also 2016- 2.7s have more magical pixie dust than 2005-2015s.

dual vvti literally stands for twice magical pixie dust.

 

Not that I've seen. Bolt ons seem to be universal with the 2.7.

aFe Drop in air filter- do this with a baffle and resonator delete
flow master 50 series delta- best muffler with stock piping for our little 2.7
tooter intake manifold spacer- don't thing he's making these anymore but have heard great things about them
