They were gutless. But it was a V8 Turbo. Oldsmobile had V8 turbos in the sixties.

I would trust car and driver over a website that reads like it was written by an ESL student. And it's not the same ecoboost motor that's in the standard f150. Shares displacement, make much more power.
    http://www.caranddriver.com/ford/f-150-raptor

A 5.0 ecoboost would be cool in a raptor, but like most of the ideas in this thread, it will not happen.

The new turbo 3.5 will probably come out around the time the next generation gasoline emissions levels need to be met.

Euro 6c will require gasoline engines to have a particulate filter for the exhaust to reduce PM to near zero.

    http://www.businesswire.com/news/ho...line-Particulate-Filter-Technology-Ready-Meet

    http://www.tenneco.com/tenneco_deve...ilter_technology_for_european_light_vehicles/

The new emissions requirements will happen stateside as well. Couple that with increasing the fuel efficiency numbers to meet upcoming CAFE requirements will require some form of turbo charging.
There is a change in the oil specifications coming soon for both gasoline and diesel engines.

The cost for a Tacoma is too high for what it is now but the new requirements will only further drive the costs up. I'd expect a 10k-15k price hike for all the changes.

I think the biggest reason Toyota might be considering turbo engines is because Ford is coming back out with the Ranger soon. It's no secret that the Ranger will have a turbo engine as an option. And with the knowledge that the Ranger was a better selling midsize in the 2000's, I think Toyota is at least taking a good long look at Turbos to stay relevant in the market and try to keep their sales lead when Ford re-enters the market in a couple of years.

Diesel is possible with the 2018 Ford Ranger concept. Although it will be similar to a European design.

EPA is looking at the GPF(Gasoline Particulate Filters) and due to the additional back-pressure boosted engines would be the only way to properly push out any extra hot combustion gasses left in the cylinders. Longer valve overlap seems to be a key solution also which is already has been utilized in the 3.5 (Atkinson cycle). My understanding from an article TOTAL (oil company) wrote is the GPF will mostly regenerate passively just due to the nature of gasoline engines hotter EGTs.

Agreed. I'm suspecting Ford offers a n/a engine, some turbo ecoboost (maybe the 2.7 or maybe a new engine), and then a turbo diesel. Ford owns Land Rover and they have some good diesel options already out there.

Mostly boosted applications will probably be utilized.

The 2.0 EcoBlue may be used also as well as some small 2.2-2.7 Ecoboost power plants.

Makes sense. And I personally think this is why Toyota is looking into turbos. I'd love to see a turbo 3.5 in a Tacoma, but I just son't see it. Maybe it does happen, but I see a smaller engine in a Tacoma. Something around 3.0L of displacement and about 325 hp and torque sounds about right for a higher trim level Taco. Of course, Toyota likes to keep their engines on a more relaxed tune to promote engine longevity, so maybe a turbo 3.5 would be an option if they keep it detuned (much like american auto makers do with their commercial diesels).

True. Although the engine still has a lot of room to increase power before reducing longevity. 3.5 twin turbo with 4 way catalyst including GPF maybe in the pipes soon.

Nope. My 2TR-FE is almost dead. High level of combustion blow-by and oil consumption is very high.
Air box did not seal against the filter lip correctly and the old K&N I had for a bit failed and created some serious dust ingestion. K&N denied claim the filter caused the issue also.

My new Ram 2500 diesel is much more reliable but it also costs considerably more to operate as far as maintenance costs. My fuel filters total over 140 dollars but that is a very tiny fraction of what it costs to replace the injectors and HPFP (high pressure fuel pump). Last I asked out of curiosity it was nearly 10,000 for all the necessary components and labor.

No, I just wanted to pass on a rumor that was told to me by the shop foreman that involved the 3rd gens. I personally thought it was good info and an interesting topic.
