OP, I have a thread 1500 mile trip that I documented how the cruise operated. I have YET to post the dealership results as I have been swamped at work and I apologise I will complete it with documentation.

The tranny will shift a hundred times at speeds above 70 mph as the engine power band does not produce enough power to maintain that speed in 6th gear. If I don't use cruise it rarely shifts as the vehicle speed will drop a little going up a hill and then recover. The cruise is designed to hold a specific speed no matter what.

I have dropped my Interstate speed down from posted 75 mph to 70 mph; and I don't hate my truck anymore because of the shifting. On a long trip it rarely shifts crazy at 70 mph ... much more enjoyable ....

I get usually 16 mpg at 75 mph .... at 70 mph I can now mostly get 18 mpg.

My cruise on my 2011 was pretty shitty. If I had the cruise set at 75 and the slightest incline....my truck would all of a sudden became a nastruck racer and kicked down to third then grabbed fourth while flooring itself to 80 ish.

You gotta go buy one first before you can do that.

Your troll comment has been duly noted though.

Troll comment? Because this guy is getting all stoked for getting more than 3 mpg less than the sticker on his truck says it should get? How is that trolling? Sounds like his and other's expectations are being routinely lowered after living with the 3rd gen. Not knocking the 3rd gen entirely but getting stoked on 19.6 highway MPG is pretty laughable. Why not just buy a gen 2 and get that MPG + much more usable torque?

My 2014 with a leveling kit and slightly larger / heavier tires typically gets 20mpg highway, and no issues with cruise control or searching for a gear. It has been a great truck but I like the look of the 'new' Tacoma and I've been kicking around the idea of a new truck. That said, any word on Toyota's plans to address the identified shortcomings with their 2016 model? Just trying to decide if I'll stay with the 2014 for a while, consider a 2017 Tacoma, or take a look at other options.

Good luck with your truck OP and I hope you get it sorted out.

Might have to turn off TW for a while...Have a 2016 with 3500 and don't have any of the problems I've seen on here. Yes, going up a hill the transmission revs up but I personally don't use Cruise Control living in Southern California due to traffic reasons and I average a combined 18.7 and routinely get above 20 on the highway :notsure:

    None.. Yet....
I just took my '16 TRD Sport Manual Transmission out to stretch its legs here in Montana.. I traveled roughly 250 miles round trip at highway speeds (80mph) using the cruise control. As stated before, this is not an automatic therefore, I would not have any real cruise control issues. I thought it did fine though.

Although, it turns off cruise control when you shift. My old '02 Jetta 1.8T would keep the cruise on. This is not a problem, as pushing down on the lever to resume is not hassle. Just a learning curve.

I averaged 20mpg.. I would suspect it would have been better if I had not passed through two fairly steep passes and not have been driving in a 40mph headwind on the way in. In town, I average 24 to 26 mpg with the MT.

PS: I love my MT.. It shifts like a dream and has not had any quirks that I have noticed. The entune works great with my iPhone 6s and I have not had any issues other than the driveline U-Joint zerks needed a top off on delivery.

This. I had the exact same issue. Topping off the tranny fluid and whatever computer shit they did worked - at speed it stays in 6th unless I'm on a steep uphill, and even then it holds 5th as long as it can. Huge improvement.

Get your ATF checked. There's a thread on it that's worth reading.

How about you take your own advice? Go troll the 2nd gen threads instead. Haven't seen anything positive coming from you yet.

    This^

Every Toyota or Lexus I've ever driven has had whacky cruise control. For some reason, Toyota doesn't seem to be able to crack that egg.

The cruise control on my 2.7 MT works well. It is also a Toyota.

I took my '16 on a 50 mile jaunt to see what all the uproar was about the CC. Got in traffic, set her at 75. Listened to the radio and had my morning joe. The CC did what it's supposed to do...Get to a small hill and the trans would drop down one gear. Crest the hill and it would go back to the previous gear. Now, I was alone and of course the truck was empty of gear. So, I don't know how much "hunting" it would do loaded down. Shut her down after 20 miles, went home and crossed off another "problem" off my problem list!!

I have not used CC since it had about 1k miles on it and before they added 1.25 qts of transmission fluid. Hopefully it works better now.

Yeah it is very weird. Took the 16 DCLB up a mountain pass from 7200 ft to 9000 ft and put it in cruise. Jumped to 5,000 RPM and stayed there. Took cruise off and was able to climb between 2500-3000 RPM's just fine. Whoever programmed to cruise on this truck was drunk.
