You look at them... Measure the shoe lining thickness. Under 1mm needs replaced. If you have access to a drum micrometer you should measure the drum too, have it resurfaced if you can. If not, replaced the drum as well.

Pull the drums off and have a look. You'll usually do a few sets of fronts before you need to worry about the rears. Also make sure to use the emergency brake regularly to keep everything from rusting from non use.

Climb under and take a look around. If anything looks suspicious give it a look. There's no be all fix all list.

Mine went tits up on my '06 at 125,000, so did the Ebrake cables. Drums are $110 each, even after markets. At your mileage, you're overdue, inspect for sure.

In all honesty, the whole truck should be inspected if you have that many miles and it hasn't been checked out recently. Not to be rude, but if you aren't sure how to inspect rear brakes you should probably have the truck looked at by a professional for any problems. Most shops will do a comprehensive inspection for pretty cheap.

Naw, dads first gen didnt need shoes till 225k miles.... and he drives like a dick... drums were still fine. Something is wrong if you are replacing drums n shoes at 125k miles.

Not necessarily... 125k is about normal. 225k is a really long time. If you keep them properly adjusted they will wear out quicker because they do more work, but it will also extend the life of your front brakes.

I would say that at 125k the drums were usable but they were so friggin rusty around the edges that they were scraping the edges of the backing plates.

Quick tip: If you can't get the drum off and you don't have a metric bolt handy to put in the little threaded hole to force the drum off, pull the bolt that holds the e-brake cable mount bracket to the front leaf spring mount, it's the correct thread for that hole

I have 145,000 miles on my 2006, rear brakes still fine. Thanks for the reminder to go take a look, it's been a few months since I last checked them out :)

bilstein set at 1.75, Racho 5000 rear with 4 leaf kit, floor mats, high lift jack, pull hook in hitch, bed rail corner braces, severe duty brake pads and devil horns on the grill....
put the rear axle on stands, pull the wheels and start wacking the drums with a hammer. It should release in about 20 minutes of pounding, inspect, clean and put a little antisieze on the hub where the drum mounts.

When I sold my 94 Pickup (pretacoma) it had 217k on the original brakes with the only maintenance being a replacement wheel cylinder when a bleeder snapped while flushing the brake system.

I would also flush the brakes while you are in there, wiggle the drive shaft, lube the e-brake cable, inspect the shocks, springs and spring bushings.

There is a round hole on the inner side of the drum with a rubber plug in it. It is on the front side of the axle. The leading shoe pad thickness can be inspected without even removing the wheel.

Avoid banging on the old drums at all cost, you will bend them. Thread the metric screw in the holes and they walk right off. I pounded the crap out of my originals on my 06 and it deformed the drum. Not to mention if your balancing weights haven't already fallen off, they will when you pound on them.

Recently I pulled off one of my drums to inspect the rear brakes as my Taco had 118,000 miles on the clock. The brake linings were about 50% worn. So i just cleaned up both rear brake assemblies with brake cleaner and reinstalled the drums. I talked with some Toyota/Taco Mechanics and they said that most rear drum brakes last to around 175,000 miles before replacement.
