Can a supercharger be tuned?

I recently purchased a 2002 Tacoma with a supercharger. I don't know a lot about the technical issues. I'm getting poor mileage.

The seller of my truck said that the truck was tuned for off roading but that it could be tuned for city/highway instead. I went to a shop called Dirty Parts in Culver City CA and they said that there was nothing to tune because the computer took care of everything.

Can someone help me revolve whether the supercharger can be tuned?

 

How would I know if it already has a piggyback unit? Is there a place to check on the truck? Thanks.

 

Try to remove the right side kick panel and look to see if there is anything plugged into the DLC. It could be wired directly to the computer also. You should see some extra wires that don't look at all OEM and (or)at least a little box.

Ps. don't go back to that shop. Is obvious they don't know and (or) care much.

 

Sorry, but could you please explain the following:
1. The kick panel is on what part of the engine? I assume the supercharger.
2. What is the DLC? I would guess it is the computer but I could not find anything on Google.

Kick panel is inside, front passanger, right foot. It should have a rubber nut or something like that. Unscrew that nut then pull back (not out) toward the rear of vehicle. Be patient and try not to break any clips.
DLC = Diagnostick LInk Computer. This should be under your left knee. I don't remember well but I believe this a standard for any car. A big plug with a lots of wires-reads OBD2. The computer is on the right side. Once you remove that panel you can't miss that.Try to remove the glove box in the same time. Is a big box with 1000 wires going in- right in the corner. Look to see if there is anything conected to that big box. If there is nothing ??? then look on the outside wall (close to the main ECU) to see if there is anything conected with zip ties. Don't be affraid to open that panel. To tell you the truth I think that the guy that told that-your ECU is set up for Off-road is full of it. Most of the time the ECU is re-flashed to perform good on any situation. I never heard of diferent set up between off road and street. Either way ,, don't worry. Give a call Monday morning to URD and I am pretty sure that they can help you. Your engine is been around for quiet a wile and you should be able to get it right.

Mean time if you want to help your self try to do a preventive maintenance.
- change spark plugs
- change air filter
- check tires air pressure
This are only few things may help with your mileage. If your truck have big tires, tarnsfer case and differential gears changed then, there is not much you can do and your mileage is about normal. Try to post a pic with, if any, modifications that you have.Beside the supercharger.
