Does anyone know how to turn off the AC when the defrost is running. I realize the AC helps dehydrate the air, and sometimes it's needed, but having a lot of vehicles w/o AC in the past, I know a lot of the time, at least here, it's not needed. I found a post on modifying the control knob, but it doesn't appear to work on 2016s as the knob is completely different. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

sorry that's been standard operation for quite a few years on Toyota's across the board.

Cant you just manually select vents to windshield and blast the fan w the AC off?

Edit: Nope. Never mind, this wont work. AC still comes on, but without the green light.

i just turn up the heat level to counter the cooling from the Defrost setting. Don't think you can cut off the A/C compressor while on the defrost setting without some major electrical jiggery-pokery in the wiring and switches.

Defrost = AC on as mentioned turn up heat a tad if you start to get condensation on the outside of the window so you dont have to use the wipers if its not raining.

Hold on one... I've heard rumors of a turbo diesel non-ac defrost for the refresh...!

OK, I'm not much good on posting stuff, so I probably left myself wide open. The reason I'm asking is just thrift. I feel like (until fracking anyway) that every gallon of gas I bought just paid for more weapons to kill our kids. Thus my I4 manual (I know, the 6 cyl auto is supposed to get the same mileage, I just don't believe it). Too, why wear the compressor when you don't have to? Anyway, my simplistic reasoning was just that it must be either software, or a connection on the control knob that might be easily addressed. No such luck. And yes, it's a great vehicle I plan to have for a ling time...if I live that long. Oh well, can't hurt to ask, right?

No joke, I'm glad it's set up like it is. There is very little that irritates me more than seeing people driving around with their windows all fogged up because they have no idea how to clear them up. People driving 65, reaching across the car to wipe the inside of the passenger window with a Kleenex. People looking through six inch patches, trying to not to run into cars or people. It's why we can't have manual control of things...

ROC I'm with you 100%; I just want to have the choice. There are certainly times when I need AC. I think Toyota must have found out people don't get it, as they don't even let the AC light come on when it's in defrost. I'm sure that saves them a lot of grief.

I find that on the gen 2 the floor selection provides some air to the windshield. If you use the straight defrost to deice the windshield and then switch to the floor it will keep your window clear without running the a/c. Check your gen 3 and see if it's the same.

I don't like buying more fuel that necessary either.

The AC will run doing that, you can't just turn off the AC.

At first I thought that was just plain crazy talk. But I havnt actually tried manually setting it up. I just wrongly assumed the controls were like any other car. So this morning on the way to work I tried going windshield vent, blower, no AC. Well, the green AC light stays off, but but the AC is definitely running. Bumps up the idle and the air is colder. Its just a case of Toyota knows best, and you will have AC when you want to clear that windshield. Not a factor for me tho- If its fogged up I want it clear.

I hang my head in shame and will edit my previous posts on the matter...
