What's up everybody? Just joined today. I have a 2001 Tacoma 2.7 4x4 5 speed extended cab. The previous owner installed 265/70/16 tires with 08 tacoma wheels. I am thinking about buying some 17" xd wheels and changing tire size to 265/70/17 tires. Will this affect my speedometer? Has anyone ran a similar setup? If so any problems like rubbing? Thanks, any info will be appreciated?

if you do get the "new 17's" just make sure you get the correct backspacing, then you wont have to worry about rubbing or spacers. welcome.

Be sure to do your comparions to the OE size, which should be in the jamb, because that's what the speedo/odo expects you to have.

While you only asked about the speedo, keep in mind the ODO is affected as well. Fuel consumption calculations change, effective gearing changes as well.

Not saying it's all bad, just that one should know.

Thanks for all the replies! when they said to get the correct backspacing, do they mean the same backspacing as my factory wheels. the aftermarket wheels I plan on buying are 17x8.5 and 6x5.5 with 0 mm, this will work without rubbing correct? im now thinking maybe i should go with 16x8 6x5.5 0 mm. I know the 17 will look better but i dont like the idea of the odometer being off. What are your thoughts should i go with the 16 or 17? Thanks for all the help!!

you talking about rim size? what affect would rim size have on your speedometer being off?

I have 33s, and when I got pulled over going 55 in a 45, I didn't argue with the cop. So I wouldn't worry about it too much

Yes, get the same backspace as your oem wheels. Get whatever rims you want, who says because you have 17 inch rims you can't keep the same diameter tire... you're just changing rim size right. Keep the tire the same, boom applesauce.
