Rear speakers very quiet

On my 2016 with the JBL system if I put the sound in just the rear speakers it is very quiet. Much quieter than other vehicles I've had. Does anyone else notice that? I'm taking it in for the 5000 mile check tomorrow so I'll have it looked at then.

 

I have asked the same thing a few times myself, this is the first I have seen anyone else mention it though. I have even tried to find another JBL package to compare it to, to see if mine is correct. It seems really really biased to the front, or my rear speakers are not working correctly. It doesn't necessarily sound bad, but if the rear were more balanced it would be better. I am very curious as to what the dealer says about yours

 

JBL in mine too and the rear speakers are just a light filler and when you set the balance to rear only it is very very weak. Out of all the Toyotas with JBL I have owned this is their poorest execution yet. The JBL in these trucks is lackluster at best. I feel like I need to have the volume on at least 37 to get decent sound from it. Every now and again when I jump back into our Venza with JBL I am reminded just how poor of an execution the Tacomas stereo really is and how poor it sounds. Still better than any other system I have experienced in a Tacoma or 4 Runner for that matter as these two platforms have always suffered from being given shitty sound systems.

 

Ha, I was driving with someone in the back for the first time this weekend and he asked me if it had rear speakers. I said , "ya shitty ones. "

 

My 2nd gen with JBL is the same way. The rear speakers do almost nothing. Even when I upgraded the speakers, same quietness. Seems there is much less power sent back there.

 

Exact same observation on my rear speakers. I don't think the speakers suck as much as they just don't have enough power to drive them. I'm not impressed with the JBL implementation...weak.

 

Glad it isn't just me,i noticed the same thing since I like my sound to come from the back more than the front.

 

The dealer said they could hear what I was talking about but compared it to a new truck on the lot and it was the same. Based on what you guys have said that seems to be the way it is. They said the front was louder because it has the tweeter and the rear is mostly for base.

 

Haha I see the dealerships still giving excellent expert advice.

Now imagine mine without JBl...... have almost zero sound anywhere!!

 

The JBL is better than the base system that my Frontier had but not as good as the uplevel system my 05 Wrangler had.

 

I just bought a '20 SR5 V6 Tacoma and was brought to this forum by a Google search for this very issue. We had the granddaughter and her husband with us out looking at Christmas lights a couple of weeks after bringing it home from the dealership. We went to one of those places where the people sync the lights to music on a radio station and the kids asked the same thing COskimtb said someone asked him: "Does this truck have speakers back here?" Sorry to hear it's endemic to the make, but happy looking into it brought me to this forum. My second Tacoma (replaces a 2015 PreRunner).

 

Welcome to TW! and holy thread revival! (had to say it, sorry). Rear speakers get the least power, only change is to get a new headunit. I found the JBL speakers to be sufficient to use, it's the headunit that blows.

 

I have noticed the same. If you try to balance the sound from both the rear and the front, you end up having to max out the volume to hear anything. There is a TSB for a faulty subwoofer amp for 2016-2018 models. Thought that might be the issue. Had the dealership check it out and they said it was operating correctly.

That all said, more sound does come out of the rear speakers than one might realize when sitting in front. I think the front seats block a lot of the sound from reaching the front of the cab somehow. When I cock my head back between the front seats, the volume increases significantly without me touching the volume knob.

 

I don't have the JBL system, but did splice the rear speaker wires to run my Sub amp. Sounds great. But I've never sat in the back to listen to the rear door speakers before.

 

2020 Tacoma... front speakers are a bit louder than I liked, so like many of you I tried to balance and fade more sound to the rear. Has anyone solved the issues. I see R242 mentioned in the post "get a new headunit". Do you mean replacing the radio? Has anyone done so and did it solve the problem?

 

I have a similar problem but with both right side speakers. The right rear is almost silent and the right front is VERY quiet. The dealership says there are no problems but cannot believe this is normal. The only speaker that works as expected is the left front speaker. Anyone else had their dealership tell them this is normal and nothing they can do to fix.

 

It appears the rear speakers work best if whatever your listening to has been encoded to produce audio through those speakers.

 

Get you a small 4 channel amp and turn the gain up on the rear. That’ll do
