I perform hunting guide services on the weekends. Do you really want me to post pictures here of that?

Hard packed dirt roads. Don't need 4wd for that.

Try unmaintained forest roads and ranch roads, in the mud, rain and snow. Hunting season is typically in the fall, winter and spring at elevations above 5000 to 8000 feet in some cases here in AZ. Hardly "hard packed" dirt roads.

    OP.

Only you can decide. But consider a few more things.........

The driver is a great deal of the issue. I've won a lot of lunches driving in 2wd where 4wd drivers got stuck.

Tires are a great deal of the issue, particularly on sand or snow/ice. And those are totally different tire requirements. And as another pointed out, 4wd will help you go, but never help you stop.

It seems like you are craving a pretty gussied up model that occasionally is used as a truck. Comfort with occasional function. For the price you are considering paying, you can buy a used, but well maintained, 4wd for your occasional fun forays, be safe and not worry about gee-whiz stuff breaking.

Have another nice used luxo box for pavement pounding. And spend a bunch less on fuel, even using both vehicles. Yea, you have more insurance and some more maintenance, but you also have lots of advantages.

Purposeful vehicles are a lot more fun. Every time you compromise something, it just becomes less fun. And less useful.

I don't see how his needs (driving on sand every once in awhile) are equal to yours in a truck.

Sand is probably as bad as anything as far as getting stuck risk goes

Hey, maybe you can sell OP your truck whenever you get your baby duramax since you're so dissatisfied with it.

37K, no sales tax. Good luck finding a TRD OR DCSB with Prem&Tech and JBL out the door for less than 37k

In the northeast there are almost no 2WD Tacomas. There are a few 5-lugs, but they are mostly fleet vehicles. I had never seen a PreRunner until I drove to NC.

That's because of snow. In the summer I don't use 4WD much. That said, I'm glad I've had it. Pulled off the side of a dirt road once where they had been logging. It looked fine, went to move and the rear end sank down. 4WD got me out. Without it, I would have been stuck two miles from any house at night with no cell service.

There is one thread on here by a guy that removed his 4x4 components. He was turning it into a street racing truck and didn't want the added weight.

It was painful to read/see lol

I got 4 wheel drive for the manual transmission. But even if 2wd had manual I'd probably still get 4x4. I don't do crazy off roading but I do like to do trails and some sand and what not. I don't have years of off roading experience so I look at the 4x4 as my safety crutch (without putting myself in a scenario where I'd get stuck in 4wd).

4wd with rear locker makes it easier on the truck for me to go where I want to go. I can make it up and around obstacles slow and steady where in 2wd I would have to have more speed, maybe even multiple attempts.

If you can afford 4x4 and plan to keep the vehicle a while, might as well go for it. I took my truck out on some desert trails and the whole time I was so glad I got a 4x4. I almost bought a 2wd configuration and honestly I would have been really upset with myself had I paid that much money for a 2wd truck.

Ive seen 2wd tacomas do some pretty impressive stuff, I think the ability of the driver is the most important thing. But I still love my 4x4 and would never buy a 2wd truck. It really just comes down to what you personally want. It sounds like 2wd could do almost anything you want it to

I live in Houston so snow is never an issue. From what I read, southern states didn't "need" it as much for weather purposes and would be fine with a 2wd, but I didn't realize the resell value was better. Might as well go big or go home.

If one doesn't want a MT, or all the bells and whistles, you can easily get a relatively cheap 4x4, in SR/SR5 trim.

You can get a 5 speed manual with the base model 2016 4x4 Tacoma, right around $27k

Well that's not a problem anymore because all 3rd gens ride at the same height.

I'm quite happy with my 4x2. For the vast majority of situations out there it's really all about tire choice, and the ~$3,000 you saved buys a lot of tire.

Unless it's a "man card" (translation: insecurity) thing where you believe your penis will literally shrivel and fall off of your body like a crunchy dried leaf if you don't get 4x4... in which case why aren't you looking at something with a V8? You gay or somethin'?
