No it's more about traction driven by weight distribution. You have very little traction on the back tires (regardless of tire type) of a pickup truck unless you weight it down significantly. The 4wd will distribute power to your front tires where most of the weight of your truck is. I can 4x4 on bald tires a lot further than you can 4x2 on MTRs or Mud Tires.

Actually I just checked on Toyotas website, the 4x4 5speed SR 4cyl Tacoma is $24,900.

If you want the v6 w/manual you have to go with the 6 speed and TRD package

I was assuming he was talking about DC only, since he kept mentioning 40K as price....

Resale value is more simply because you spent more in the first place...

Ask any decent financial planner and they'll tell you vehicles are terrible investments because they only depreciate. Spending 3k more for 4wd "because resale" is one of the stupidest things anybody can say because you're still losing money on that 3k when you go to sell it.

You're more full of shit than a 10 year old porta john at a construction site.

Also I'm convinced you don't know how 4wd works.

I live in Florida and got stuck on the beach with my pre-runner.... Once and only once. Guess what? So do people with 4x4 and honestly I was stuck for all of 5 minutes before the beach patrol said "wanna a quick pull out". Answer "yup". Done. I have had 4x4's and agree with most who say you really don't need it unless your seriously wheeling or mudding. My useless 2 cents OP. Buy what ever suits you. Just don't be "one of those" and claim it's a 4x4 while polishing your pre-runner emblem. :) It is what it is.

I agree. It all depends on what tires you have...
It's like having AT tires in mud, you're not going anywhere.

I just have regular tires on mine..nothing fancy. Look up the winter MA got in 2014-15 and bear in mind I drove an hour or more every day in that.

What a novel discussion. I don't think I've ever seen folks discuss the merits and cost benefit tradeoffs of 4x4 vs 4x2 on TW before.

this!. this is the best thing to do. if you can afford it, don't settle..settle will only end in regret. just be sure that you know what you are giving up in the process...example A: i bought a $40K truck, therefore, i can't afford to buy a nicer house, until a few more pay raises

Good point, the overall situation sometimes needs consideration..or maybe instead of a new 2WD, buy a used 4WD if you don't want to settle for 2WD

You always get stuck and you ask if you need 4wd?

    4wd is vital.

Yup. This is why you want to basically amortize cars into dust. Drive them 10+ years, only flip 'em when repairs start exceeding the intrinsic value. If you follow that rule as much as you can, to retirement, you'll end up approximately one dream car ahead of the game.*

*Dependent on price of said dream car. It's something like $100,000 if I remember right, versus flipping cars every 3-4 years.

    Hahahahahaha. I like you.

Also the F/R weight distribution on Tacos is way more favorable than you would think. I seem to recall it being something like 56/44. Assuming a 4000lb even curb weight, that's 4 40lb bags of play sand (or one 160lb adult, AKA a trivial load) to swing it a full 2% to the rear. Go apeshit and throw 12 bags in the back, and you've got spot on 50/50.

Compare that to older F150's that are 61/39... and much heavier!

I always said if I ever have a car payment I'll keep the vehicle double the length of it. I broke that the first time with my 06 Colorado because the engine croaked at 70K. Right now I'm 3.5 yrs in with the Tacoma and 6.5 at least to go.
