Shudder in drive train while coming to stop

I did the ecgs fix for the front diff and it fixed the hmm hmm hmm vibes when driving and decelerating but the vibes like a rumble strip shaking sensation now worse than stock cause of 3 inch lift are still there and really bad also bit of a takeoff stuffer shimmy truck did all of this before lift albeit lot less noticeable guy at my work did shims on his 2014 and said his vibes are gone.. Nothing done to carrier bearing which I thought would be it so take that for what it is I'm tempted to throw in some 3 degree shims and see... Maybe stack some washers to drop Carrier if that doesn't work.

 

My coming to a stop shudder/15-25 MPH vibe TOTALLY goes away with 200-300 pounds of shit in the back. Smooth as silk. I'm gonna throw several bags of mulch back there and keep it there until Effin 'yota fixes it.......

Its not the front driver side needle bearing, although is has very similar characteristics as the 2nd gen needle bearing issue.

 

mine didn't do it until I put in 3" OME lift & 285/17's. doing a center bearing in the next few days while lowering it.. can see it move around a lot. my truck is a 2007 I just lifted

 

What are the torque specs for the U-bolts? Dealer is blowing me off so I figured I'll check them myself.

 

Have you found a solution to the hard downshift from 2nd to 1st?

Ditto - love the update when it comes to highway driving, but it still doesn't resolve the fact that sometimes I can literally let off the brake approaching stopped traffic and the truck will more or less stop itself from the downshift.

 

So far the downshift is not as pronounced for me. This could change as the transmission starts to relearn and "outsmart" itself

 

I've gone through all the other driveline threads....I would say the majority of us experiencing the 15-25mph vibration have the Off Road model....

Is the OR model more susceptible to this defect?

 

I had the T-SB-0077-16 performed today and insisted they grease the u-joints even though the service advisor insisted there are no zerks on the u-joints. The repair order states the u-joints were greased. Wow imagine that. A service advisor who doesn't know as much as we do here on this forum.

Anyway now with the TSB and greased u-joints I no longer have the vibration and jerk when coming to a stop.

Just saying. Driving around with a cloud of sour milk smell coming out of your truck is going to be awful.

 

@Bossman14 I have the exact same issue on a 2017 Tacoma with less than 1500 miles on it. I isolated it to the front drive-line as well by using a ziptie on the front drive line u joint yoke to the frame cross member. Did you ever get a resolution to this issue? I took mine to the dealership today and they are suggesting the needle bearing fix which is clearly not the issue if the problem goes away once the transfer case and differential is warmed up. Mine only exhibits this behavior when the vehicle is cold, and the colder it is the more pronounced the issue is. However if you drive the vehicle on the freeway for 10 minutes or operate in 4wd and warm things up the issue goes away. It was not noticeable in 70 degree weather, but I live in Utah and when the weather got cold that is when it surfaced. I believe its due to the viscosity of the oil in cold weather conditions causing the front drive line to "windmill" at a faster rate than under warmer conditions. Any info would be great.

Mine has the rumble strip feeling during deceleration. Plan to have dealer check it when I bring it in for 5k service in a few weeks.

 

yeah mine started at 500 miles and it started when it was cold, but after about 3000 miles it did it when it was warm, i replaced the needle bearing with the ECGS bushing and that helped a little but the vibe was still there. The noise goes away in 4-wheel drive, it also goes away when i zip tie the to front drive shaft to the frame just like you did. I also took the front drive shaft off and the noise went away. I then marked each yoke, one on the front diff and the one on the transfer case, after driving i noticed that the transfer case was the only one that spins (when driving in 2wd). So i have concluded that the transfer case is causing a viscous friction within and its causing the front drive line to turn with little force (little force bc it cant break the zip tie) which then turns the detached spider gears which are the problem, the tolerance are so loose with the spider gear its just plain sloppy in there. so i have a few options for fixes... One, leave the zip tie, Two change the oil in the transfer case so there is no viscous friction build up ( i plan to do this next i might go with redline gl-4 75-85w), Three replace the front diff third member with an arb locker ( 2000 bucks).

But i am almost certain that the culprit is Toyota's large tolerance between the spider gears, i think thats why some trucks have it and some dont.

So what is Toyota telling you? Do you have a Toyota customer service case open that they are tracking? I opened one yesterday which I am going to pursue, but I am not sure if anything will come of that....
