Seriously. Never seen one. Only my brothers 2004 WRX. Very easy to check and maintain on that car.

My 99 Subaru outback manual had a dipstick, but I can't for the life of me remember if my 14 Tacoma does. Apparently it doesn't, in spite of my lack of memory of filling it.

SII land rovers have a dipstick on the manual transmission. Accessed from the under seat inspection panel. Other than that, never seen a dipstick on a manual.

Well damn I'm going to have to trade my Taco in for Subaru... not.

To check fluid level drive to nearest dealer and get a 5K service or a 10K service and be sure to ask them to check the fluid level and the repeat yourself so you are sure they hear you. It's supposed to be part of the 5K "fluids check" they call a service ..... wait for it...... and they didn't check mine. The bolts are painted and I checked to see if mine was checked and of course it wasn't and neither was the transfer case...

BTW - are the transfer case and manual transmission connected internally with shared oil by chance - anyone know?? I didn't check my owners manual sorry....

There are differing perspectives from the Dealership Service Dept on how to check the fluids. They will argue that hooking it up to techstream/the computer it will tell them if it is normal level or not. This is much different and less involved than pulling the check plug and getting it up to the proper temp, etc. I guess one would have to delve into the policy and procedure to see what exactly is "REQUIRED" to fulfill the policy as far as a "check" is concerned. From what I've seen and heard here, from folks who are knowledgeable on these systems, the best and most precise way to check the fluid level is the 1 to 2 hour method where they pull the check plug, pin the thermostat, yadda yadda yadda.... but the dealership is going to be hard pressed to do this on a 5k service. It comes down to semantics and arguing their advertisement promises vs. what is the most appropriate method to check the levels.

I have a manual tranny ... no need to worry about proper temps and I dont think there's a hookup for the techstream for the manual either.

Pull the plug, stick finger in hole, feel the fluid, add if needed & install plug.

Old school the way I like it, not that there's anything wrong with technology or anything but not needed for a manual IMHO.

All TOYOTA manuals require you to get underneath the vehicle. Its the same thing with my 90 4runner. Just the way it is. I actually prefer this method because for me its easier to check. I am awful at checking auto trans fluid. Also gives me a reason to check my other fluids while down there like my differentials.

Also I'm gonna say the obvious because I know there are a few people that do not know better, no you do not put ATF in a manual trans. You're going to be using regular old gear oil. Most of the time it's even the same type and weight as you'd put into a differential. Makes checking everything all at once that much easier

There is a nice simplicity I like about filling gear boxes to where it starts coming out the fill hole. Hard to muck up. It's how the final drives are on my shaft drive motorcycles.

I've never owned a manual. In fact I've been known to forget about the brake interlock some have when starting them.

They are fun. My old Tacoma was really, deep down, a 4x4 sports car. I kind of wish I had a MT in the FJ but the drive to work is a bit less stressful now. Now, if Magnusson produces a S/C for the 2010+ FJs, I might be tempted to do something really stupid (or smart, depending on the perspective).

I test drove an FJ with manual <-- truck was ahem used some for wheeling - a lot of rust on the frame and the frame looked cracked to me... I'd be in that one if it wasn't for the abuse.

Next day I took my Taco Manual TRD Sport for a test drive and well here we are!

I was going to write off the new Tacoma due to all the auto xmission problems.I will now compare the trd manual against the frontier pro-4x. Looks like the 2018 TRD OR only comes in automatic transmission?
