Pavement princess - 2wd is fine. Don't be that guy who is off pavement and asking for tows though.

In AZ you don't pay sales tax on private party sales so poor assumption on your part. My truck also has JBL as well as additional options and invoiced for nearly 1k more than those listed.

So the Sport does not have the locking differential? Just a limited slip differential? I know I"m showing my noob colors here.

Correct. With the sport you pay a pretty penny for color matching fender flares and a hood scoop.

    Just to add.
I just did my 10k service and it rides like a dream with the ECT on. Smooth shifts just when you want them. Without ECT is also great. You just have to drive it like a 4 banger and let it catch speed. Saw 26 MPG on my 67 mile commute this morning. I live in southern California and I'll probably never see mud with this truck so no need for 4x4.

Crawl control is just another aid to help people who don't know what they're doing get out of trouble. It's a gimmick and literally does nothing that you cant do with your feet.

What of the Premium/Tech/JBL packages do you love so much that you're willing to spend over $4k for?

Well with the JBL package I don't have to worry about having some store geek tear open my tacoma to install speakers, sub, amp to upgrade. Sure its cheaper, but the JBL was designed for Tacoma and installed by people that do it all day long. Plus finding a sub that fits perfectly behind the seat may not be so easy, or maybe it is. Haven't really shopped for it yet.

    Premium/Tech
During my first test drive I was introduced to all the magic of the technology. Heated seats, Moon Roof (which I currently have and enjoy), and Blind Spot Monitor all seemed to be a nice switch over from my Acura. Its like I'm not losing all the tech that I currently enjoy, only gaining more.

I can get a 2WD Sport DCSB for under $35-36k. Same as the 4wd without the extra "fun"

I do wish I had the blind spot monitors (even if a bunch of people are having issues with them). And the stock sound system could definitely use the upgrade.

Horrible advice. Spend 3-4k more to get about half that back.

I really hope some of you giving this type of advice aren't financial advisors, horrible financial thinking. Even if you had to pay $200 for a tow say twice in your truck owning period that is way cheaper than 3-4k upfront costs plus the added fuel, maintenance, insurance, financing ect. OP should know if he needs it or not.

Those that think it is some type of manliness thing just need to GTFO and grow up. Probably the same types that think they need it down south for the weather...

He lives down south, resale desirability is not an issue. Some of yall need to stop pushing him towards something he doesn't need and make it sound like you are only cool if you have 4wd.

If OP wanted to buy something based solely on resale value he should be looking at Wranglers not Tacomas.

Everyone who says "my 2WD can do anything my 4x4 buddies can" or "my 2WD does anything I point it at" or something along those lines hasn't wheeled hard enough. Sorry. Not doubting your "off road abilities or how hard you beat the shit out of your truck. It's just physics.

Anyway, yeah it was said before, if you're dropping $40k on a truck it better have 4WD.. Sheyt.

And anybody who says they cant get their 4wd stuck no matter how hard they try isn't trying hard enough.

From what I gather, OP isn't interested in taking his truck to Moab...he'll be driving on a populated beach a handful of times a year.

Seems like the only people adamant on NEEDing 4wd are the 3rd gen owners. Maybe there's a design flaw with 2wd 3rd gens that make them incapable of driving on anything other than pavement?
