AC automatically on with defrost is standard behavior with most cars. Had it on my '99 Mazda and my current 2011 Subaru.

What % of oil comes from Canada and domestic US sources nowadays?

You are correct. Guess I was just looking at the AC light. Didn't toggle it to check idle.

Im not sure, but we're now making enough want to export. I've read varied accounts of how long fracked oil reserves will last, but that depends too on what will happen with the earthquake and pollution issues, as they could affect pumping (he said stating the obvious). At least not so much is coming from hostile or questionable countries.

With the 2.7L it is very noticeable the power loss when the defroster is on, and I'm sure mpg's are affected. I was going to wire an interrupter switch to the AC Clutch so that it won't turn on, seems simple, but I haven't looked into if the ecu will notice and freak out.

On my 4runner there is an option to set the selector to defrost/floor vents. In this position I get plenty out the windshield vents and I can use the AC or not. Is this option on the new Tacoma?

Yes, I can confirm this. I played with it for several minutes. If you are going clockwise from the top, as soon as you hit the floor/defrost at about 5 o'clock, the compressor comes on and remains on through til full defrost (7 o'clock). The AC light is off, but AC is on and pushing cold air, and there is about 100-150 RPM shift. Once you go counter-clockwise to 4 o-clock, it is off.

If you weren't paying attention, you would just assume the AC was off due to the light and the RPM jump is pretty small without looking for it.

I think so, but then there's no option for AC (right?). Im trying to have the choice, but that's a thought.
