I agree that the extra money spent for 4x4 probably depreciates slower(Keeps its value better) than the rest of the truck but it depreciates nonetheless. It isn't a great reason to spend more. All that matters is if he needs/wants it.

It's worth noting. 4WD is not really 4WD. The axles are open, meaning 2WD is really 1WD and 4WD is really 2WD. Unless you're planning on investing in a locker, or I understand some of Tacos' have lockers in the rear. Sand is notoriously difficult to drive in, stop in, park in. Experience will help you more than any vehicle. Air down, stick to firm sand, don't get caught in the surf always wheel with a buddy or two.. 4WD are over rated IMHO, are maintenence heavy and more hastle than is needed. I drove a built Jeep for many years, rarely used 4WD, it's hard to steer on the tight trails and simply not needed. I use RWD locked and lots of gas..

    Works for me.. Good luck..

4x4 is completely unnecessary right up to the point where it's entirely necessary.

Maybe you weren't reading my posts the way I intended, but both of my posts have the same information in them. One just has a bit more specific details about ratios.

The important part that you're looking for comes right at the end of the second quoted post:

Summary: All manual transmission models have the 8.8" differential (even the 2.7). For automatic transmission models, only the TRD OR gets the 8.8" diff, all other automatic transmission models have the 8.0" diff.

I pieced this information together from various sources including the parts catalog and the NCF book, but here is the exact information I believe you are looking for:

(Source: 2016 Tacoma NCF Book (Pub. No. NM26L0U, Page 266-267)

    Parts Catalog Application Usage Information:
(Source: Catalog No. 674470, PNC 41101, Edited for Readability)

    BD20D (8.0" without Locker): GRN305,310,325,330,TRN245,265.. WITH(6AT)
    BD22A (8.8" without Locker): GRN305,TRN245.. WITH(5MT or 6MT)
    BD22AN (8.8" with Locker): GRN305,310,325,330..SR5 WITH(OFF-ROAD PACKAGE, 6MT or 6AT)

    Hope that helps!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure a reasonable proportion of the people who insist 4x4 is a necessity have never in their lives tackled something like this, that this dude just climbed in a Prerunner.

It's really that simple. Driver + Tires makes a world of difference in the offroading equation, and 4x2 can still get along acceptably, provided you've got the skill. You can bluster and bullshit till you're blue in the face, but it doesn't change the truth, and the proof is right there.

I will add my story, or at least my friends: he had two wheel drive, I had 4wd...he got stuck in his yard when he went to attach his trailer after it had rained and I had to pull him out and the trailer. It should be noted that his yard is un-even. Was he ridiculously stuck? no. But, it was just enough to where his tires couldnt grip. obviously better tires probably could have been good enough, but the fact remains that his 2wd got stuck

I can go more places in my 4x4 than you can go with the best tires in 4x2.

Why aren't Rokons more popular since their front and rear wheels are driven unlike the rest of dirt bikes that are only rear driven.

Being the mad scientist I am, of course I'm now wondering if it's possible to retrofit the 8.8 locker or if it would require massive fab work.

Just wondering if you all put your trucks in 4wd immediately when off pavement or wait till you actually need it
