Aw jeez, you had me thinking that he had actually passed away!

That's never fun, I went through that with another forum a while back. Had a member who was a really nice dude, long time poster, really great asset to the community. Hung out with him a few times, even. Then one day he killed himself out of the blue. Took a while to get my head straight after that, he was one of those guys who always had a smile on his face and a smart ass comment to bust your chops with.:(

maaaaan that sucks dude, been there with a local car club/forum. We've lost probably 15 members over the last 10 years, and knew all of them pretty well...

If you're only planning to do these things, then I'd prob not spend extra $$ on 4x4. I think most people overestimate the things they'll do once they get their truck. If you're not already 4x4ing, you probably aren't going to start in a $40k rig.

Having said that, if you're gonna drop $40k on a Tacoma, man, I'd think you've gotta go 4x4.

    Here is my 0.02...

I bought my truck about 2.5 years ago....shortly after that I joined this site. I started to read the threads on here and I was getting a huge feeling of regret that I didn't go with 4x4, not because I actually needed it, but I felt like I SHOULD have it. Fast forward till now and I have never been in a situation where I have needed 4x4. Have taken road trips around Utah, Death Valley, Oregon etc...granted I don't do any serious off-roading but for the minimal off-roading I have done, the truck has performed fine. I've never had the urge to do serious off-roading/rock climbing anyway, doesn't really interest me and the truck also serves as my daily driver.

Also, living in the Bay Area you definitely don't have to worry about snow either, unless you go to the mountains all the time. I know if I ever moved to somewhere with a drastically different climate i would probably trade in my truck for a 4WD. For now though I see no need, and am happy with my 2wd....which will be paid off in 2 weeks!

I was on the fence about it. Never did much 4x4 outside of work. But I decided on the TRD off road and have not regretted it for a second. I have plans to beach camp, and I've already used 4x4 a few times.

It opens up what you *can* do with your truck.

I would say 4wd is all about use of your truck and your geographical location. For me, living in Hawaii where almost everything is built on a slope, and serious off roading requires 4wd it's a no brainer. Necessary to get to some hunting and fishing spots. I can't even get to some of our job sites without 4wd. On the other hand, plenty of people who live here do just fine and are happy with a 2wd. I would just keep in mind that you are limiting yourself by getting a 2wd.

If I'm off-roading at one of our local OHV parks on the weekend I'll keep it in 4H most of the trip (4lo if I need it) just to exercise the system and keep everything lubed up. Otherwise, there's not much of a chance to do it living in socal. Conditions in the city never warrant 4x4 so I have to make it a point to use it, which I try to do every weekend because its fun :D :mudding:

Compared to the older differential lock design, the new 8.8" should be quite a bit easier to retrofit into a truck that didn't come with it. :)

I have the sport, sunroof, tow pkg, etc.... Mine was around 41k OTD. I think 4x4 is good to have no matter where you live. I don't OR much, but it's still nice to have

Depends on where you live and the planned use of the truck. If I lived in MA, 4x4 would be a no brainer. If you live in Texas and get off paved roads to hunt, work a ranch, etc. then it makes sense. I would certainly prefer it driving on the sand at Padre Island.

This decision seems quite easy. If you need it, it doesn't cost that much.
