It's awesome they did a killer job on making it I also wanted to free up the roof for equipment like I have a locking case for my straps and recovery gear and some Maxtrax and looking at a solar panel as well to charge my dual battery set up I'm working on

My friend sets up an elk camp for extended stay (the previous poster talked about extended stays....) I normally go camping twice monthly as well. I just use a bivy on the ground or a free standing tent. I have a Bestop coming for my Taco- I'll be sleeping in the back of that when I cover hundreds of miles looking for ditch pigeons, grouse and ducks.

Hey - that's pretty big. Are you a guide, or just generally awesome? Wall tents are the shit.

I'm using the Rhino rack Ditch Mount bases, RLT600 towers with the oval bars. I like the quick release on the RLT. It allows me to keep the rtt mounted on the bars and lift the tent off the roof after releasing the bars from the towers. the plan is get a hoist and lift it straight off the roof into the garage ceiling. it's that time of the year where the garage needs a serious clean. I'm sure I'll have it figured out by the end of the fall when I put the rtt away for the season.

It's actually colder to be off the ground than on it.

last week I saw a guy make a quick tent out of a tarp and two bicycle wheels at each end. he took the wheels off the bike he was riding on a cross country trip. It rained all night, but when i walked by him in the morning, he looked to be sleeping soundly. some folks tow around the Taj Mahal. Some folks make due with a tarp and couple bicycle wheels.

ARE Overland. Looks especially good on the TRD OR in my opinion because of the "reinforced high stress areas" (black on the shell) which matches the black overfenders fairly well. Black rims just adds to the contrast.
    And thank you!

If so why does every survival video/expert always insist on putting something across the ground to raise them up off the ground a bit they even teach special forces that in survival training the ground retains a lot of cold

The ground is an insulator. So is snow. Try taking your sleeping bag (and your pad) and try to sleep in a hammock when it is below 40 degrees at night. Then sleep on the ground. There is a reason hammocks were developed in warm tropical climates- under those conditions it is better to have the cooler evening air around you because it is too hot to sleep.

A ground pad is used to soften your bed and add additional insulation, but the ground is an insulator.

    That's pretty much it.
Air drops temperature faster. I'm sure you've seen the highway sign "Bridge freezes before Road" ? That's because of the air passing under the span chills and freezes the water. Roadway surface in contact with the ground doesn't freeze as fast, the ground is the insulator.
