Kicker these days are nothing like Kicker back in the 90's/2000's. A lot of the big manufactures from that ear just don't have the same quality as they did.

Kicker..Blaupunkt..and yeah I was an 80-90's kid just starting on this stuff. Or they make a cheap line for Walmart and then a better line for top end

I thought you were going somewhere else with your earlier statement. Sorry if I offend.

MOST car audio brands have been sold at least once and most changed dramatically for the worse. Soundstream, PPI, Quart, etc are very different brands than they were in their heyday. It's hard to keep up with it all.

Well its up to you. If you are just trying to get your speakers louder then what you have will be fine... however im concerned with the direction of sound for you with your setup, by that i mean... if you are getting rid of the factory tweeters then you may lose some of your highs because the speakers are mounted so low. Highs and mids are directional and if they are not pointed towards you the quality of sound will not be its potential.

But you may want to check out some component speakers to see what they can do. Like i said i would just go to a local Car toys and check out their speakers and find some you know you will like.

None was taken. Not that I expected top quality from it, but I have to say that SOB is still working 16 yrs later and I am not easy on it either. Part of me wants to upgrade but the other says I can't justify spending the money when at least this one is still alive.

I'd call that a ringing endorsement. 16+ years is a long time for any electronic component - especially one exposed to life in a car.

Exactly. This is the exact reason I keep a stock of older amps. Currently I have the following:

    PPI Art Series a1200
PPI Chrome Series PC1800 and PC2400
PPI Charcoal Series PC450 and PC2350
    Kicker ZR1000.1
    RockFord BD1500.1 (2000's build)

All of them still work. Currently I'm using the Chrome PPI's in my Civic and the ZR1000.1 will go in whenever I decide on the sub I want to use. I might use the Art Series a1200 but I have a feeling if I hold on to that long enough I'll be able to sell it for more than I paid for it in the 90's.

Nice! I wish I still had all my old stuff. Lots of nice new stuff out there, but when I see the prices of some of that old gear that I just gave away...

When class D started getting big I started collecting all the A/B amps I could find. That Art Series PPI however I bought new in the 90's and odds are I'll have it cremated with me when I die. The other PPI's I've always loved and I have lots of spare parts to fix them if they blow (which still hasn't happened).

I miss the old days of stereo.

Never was able to get my hands on ADS back then. Hell even the old Earthquake amps were awesome back in the late 80's/early 90's.

    Anyways sorry to thread jack!

Kicker door speakers are not that good. I feel like you can do better... But like i said its your ride so do what makes you happy!! That is all that matters. JL is a great brand but they charge for the name! There are so many brands out there now that you really just need to find a price point you want and find a brand that makes quality speakers in that price range.

I guess a better question would be... what do you intend to achieve out of your system??

Just trying to get louder? Better sound quality? Great sound quality? Competition sound quality? All have different options and price points. You have the right idea, just need to piece it together...

I do too in a way, but the choices we have now are WAY beyond what was available then. And your money goes so much further. And DSP is cheap and good. Speaker technology is just leaps better - especially subwoofers. Hundreds of lossless albums on a cheap tiny thumb drive or way more on little drive networks. Super-cheap tuning tools like REW and affordable mics. Clean, efficient watts on the cheap. Internet to find it all and listen to a bunch of knuckleheads argue about it.

    I miss it, but I don't.

They aren't shit, but you can do better for the money.

True on the storage, but I hate digital. CD only..which is still much better than tapes, so there is that
