yep, great little filter. I wish I had an MSR sweetwater to compare to. I was torn between those two to begin with and ended up going with the katadyn just because cabelas had one in stock and I had a Christmas giftcard.

For a group of 3, which is what our hiking group will have, the Platypus GravityWorks seems to be the easiest/high volume system. I'll check out that site and read about it.

 

If you already have a couple bladders you can build your own gravity filter with a Sawyer mini.

 

I have nothing, except for our regular camelback bladders. But we'll be using these.

 

For hobby use, they all work. Purists will argue about them until they're blue in the face, but for the casual user it doesn't really matter, lol.

Exactly. You don't need to worry too much about the fine points as long as the filter hits the key things that you want. One piece of advice I'd offer is that if you're filtering shallow/puddle water to bring a handkerchief and a rubber band to put over the intake to keep it from pulling up sediment, because that'll clog your filter element in no time.

I've been seeing that, and coffee filters as the suggested thing for all filters.

 

Same idea, yeah. I like the handkerchief because I only have to pack one. It doesn't do as good of a job as a coffee filter, probably, but it's reusable and multipurpose.

yep. its basically the same thing as the gravity works except a hell of a lot cheaper and you use stuff you already have!

 

Can't beat the Sawyer mini. Many of us use them all Summer working on the forest here

 

any details on how to put this together? I have at least 4 bladders just sitting around from various resources.

 

Just got notified our new osprey day lite packs are shipped can't wait to try them and my new merrells out on the 14ers in Colorado, glacier park and Moab on our trip starting next week

 

if you have the bladders and the hoses already, all you need is the sawyer mini to go between whichever bladder you designate the "dirty bag" and the bad you designate the " clean bag" ive never used the sawyer but i assume its uni directional so you have to have it positioned so that the flow from the dirty bag to the clean bag is in the right direction for the in-line filter. after its all said and done, it should look something like this

I recently changed the dirty water bag over to the 3L Platypus Big Zip because it's easier to fill and it has a quick disconnect.

Anyone know the difference between the gray & green Kelty Noah's tarps? Is the gray version just outdated? I don't see it on Kelty's site. I want to be sure before I drop $60 on a tarp.
