    It is, especially if you or others have never seen a desert up close. More than anything it shows the geographical diversification of San Diego County. If you go you may want to pack a picnic lunch and have it at San Diego County Park's Agua Caliente hot springs (pack boadr shorts)

    Like others, try the zoo and/or the wild animal park. kind of different flavors, both amazing, but your whole trip could be those 2 places. I'd pick one.

    In & Out is a must.

    If you can find one down there, try The Hat for arguable the best pastrami in the southland. They might just be OC/LA though. I'm native to OC, not San Diego...

    The USS Midway is cool. You can park and also from there walk to the baseball stadium, Gas Lamp district, and the bar from Topgun (you know, when Tom cruise chats up Kelly McGinnis)

    I'd give the hotel a call and ask when the social events are during your stay period. Sometimes they limit the social events to certain days (T,W, TH). Many of the Residence Inns I've stayed at have free beer/wine and food at the social events. I've stayed at some where I didn't do anything for purchasing food other than a light lunch.

    The Residence Inns also have refrigerators, a stove top, and microwave with all cooking gear and dinner wear in each room.
