    A fixer upper can definately be a good investment, especially if forsay down the line you decided you want to move than you'll make a nice profit depending on the market.
    One of my family's rentals we bought & the walls were full of holes, now it's worth nearly double the value :D
    If you can do a lot of the work yourself or with friends than I say go for it
