Sup guys, been lurking this thread here and there but I might have missed it. Anybody have experience with a Hobart Handler 140 MIG welder? I'm thinking about buying one for general small-time fab stuff. I'm still going to my local community college for welding classes and I figured this would be a good machine on a budget.

Hobart makes good machines, but if I can make a suggestion, try to get a welder that allows you to run 110 and 220. The Hobart Handler 210 has the multi volt plug feature. It costs more, but if you get serious about welding (which I assume you are since you're taking classes), it saves you from having to upgrade in the future. 110v can do a lot, but it has it's limits. The one you picked out isn't a bad machine though- of that truly is the very top of your budget, then I'd say go for it. My first welder was/is 110 and I can still build some pretty neat things. Although there are times I wish I had 220v capability. Might be worth it for you to save a little more.

Awesome! I have thought about getting one of the 110/220 machines but I figured since I would mostly be welding out of my garage it wouldn't be worth the extra, maybe I'm wrong. Any particular reason why the extra voltage would be better? Besides welding thicker materials, it seems like both machines run the same amperage and the duty cycle is the same as well.

That's just it, allows you to weld thicker materials and get better heat penetration. With the 110 machines you'll end up having to do multiple passes on thicker materials and it gives you a bit of a raised bead. It really depends on what you think you'll be doing or what your intentions are for welding. When I bought my welder, I wanted it for sheet metal body work since I was into restoring muscle cars and for home projects like fencing and such. That type of welding requires less heat and a light touch. I never thought I'd be building off-road shit so it didn't even cross my mind that I'd be getting into thicker materials. Now look what happened.

That's right. I don't think we met, there was a lot of people there and shuffling around but I wanted to talk to you about your rack. Just didn't know who you were.
    :anonymous:
Rack looks good man! With work like that, you'd definitely want to get the 210.

You really need to do your research on these Multi voltage welders.

Mostly they are just a marketing promotion allowing you the option of using a 240 volt plug .

Although the newer inverter based welders are a true multi voltage welder at least the ones I have looked at

I just bought one and it arrived yesterday and i got to play with it a bit. I blew a hole through 3/16s plate with it on setting 4 of 5, for a 110 it has some balls, I cant wait to finish my SAS with it. I was borrowing a lincoln weld pak 100 for my SAS and it took a shit on me. As for 110 vs 220, if you are running flux core on a 110 machine is fine for what we do. Most of the frame fab work for my axle swap i would have been blowing holes in the frame with a 220 machine or it would have to be cranked down so low i might as well have used a 110 machine, this includes welding on a Toyota axle housing. I am rarely welding over 3/16s, and if i have to it will get multipassed and or preheated. Just my opinion.

Cant run 220 out to my garage unless I install a new panel, no open slots, and rip out half the ceiling in my basement. I want to kick who ever drywalled my basement ceiling in the balls.

i guess I have been really lucky when going to school having teachers that had real world experience in their fields .

Not only did I learn to set up any machine with dials that just had a arrow pointing up.

Flow Meters the same way you had porosity you increase flow to it went away

Learned how to trouble shoot most any process problem and get back up running as soon as possible

This was in my 10th grade class .

I am not sure if teaching these things is to much liability now days .

Helping a friend process some new hires these were local area votech grads about 100 miles from where I live.

Knowing full well They were required to do a hands on welding test the first three showed up in shorts and sandals " I asked would you like to get changed "

    "Why " "

    Thanks for stopping by "

I asked the owner was this a joke "No now you see how hard it is to find people "

I am mean I covered the Digital Meters with tape .

Only the Female Applicant passed the test!!

    Always to late

Opinions? Help? Advice? Lol. 1/8 gap 3/32 filler ~75amps. Trying so hard to get a testable root. Its getting better but not where it needs to be yet :pout: KIMG0285.jpg KIMG0283.jpg

Your making this hard on yourself !!

I know low budget working with what you have laying around

Can often cause drinking and divorce

Do you know for sure just what your welding on.

When testing for real nice new material either turned with a lathe or one of those fancy pipe bevel machines.

GTAW clean clean clean and some more !!!

    I know you know this.

    Inert purge with coffer dams

Just what code are you trying to pass.??

What are you looking for in your passable root ??

Are you cutting coupons out and bending them?? It is the only way to really test them Then they need to be prepared correct or more flaws then you have will show up.

Just what machine are you using??
