Good thinking. It'll keep the bugs off your expensive tent too!

I'm looking for tracks for my shell. Are you guys bolting your tracks through the shells or using those nut inserts, which are inserted into shallow holes. I'm thinking I need to bolt all the way through the camper shell, but it appears they don't provide that hardware with the shorter 42" tracks.

Bolt all the way through and use a large fender washer on the inside. Usually companies have a bolt version for fiberglass and a nutsert version for steel or aluminum roofs. Since the fiberglass is softer you will want to bolt through. I have used 1/4" diameter bolts on the ones I have installed. Slightly larger than what most manufacturers provide but better in my opinion.

I just went through that myself, so here goes:

    - you bolt all the way through the roof of your shell. This makes buying bolt a bit tricky, since you don't know how long they need to be before you drill your first hole(s).
    - I ended up needing 25mm bolts. I used 1" aluminum strap as "unified washers" on the inside 1) thinking that it'd be stronger than just using washers and 2) by offsetting the holes for the bolts, I had room to adhere my LED shell lights to the aluminum strip.
    - I bought flange nuts for the inside.

    Not enough...

I bought a set of used Thule tracks from this dude, and they came without any mounting hardware, so I just picked up a set from Yakima. Was 4 times cheaper than a set from Thule.

Just bought a 54" set of Yakima with capnuts for $100 delivered with Amazon prime. Cheapest I could find, but I'll have to trim them a little.

In hindsight that's the way to go - much easier than guessing at bolt lengths, drilling holes and then driving around to find the right bolts :) I'm still happy with my aluminum strap solution.

I may use your strap idea. I have a lot of long pieces of steel I could use. Seems like it would be a little stronger that way actually cause less stress to the shell.

I'll post in this thread and all over the 3rd Gen forum. Your truck is the only time I have ever seen this rack on a truck. I don't think he has made that many of these. Its going to look sharp on my 2016 quicksand. Looking g forward to being the first 2016 with this rack! It's going to be a long couple of weeks.

I can't thank @zscott enough. I know others have complained about him returning emails but he replies to mine within a day each time I send him one.

All I can say is @zscott is a hell of a guy. Everyone really needs to be patient. It's amazing how he is managing a day job, running this business (PDS), and taking care of a family with a special lovely little girl and an ambitious little guy by his side. Have you seen his last group buy, OMG, over 150 orders, all of them different request. @zscott definitely has a full plate and his hands full. I know he is doing the best he can and he will accomplish filling every ones order. He is doing all of this himself, so it will take some time. His customer satisfaction is always his priority. Everybody needs to be patient, his products are worth it.
