My '15 started making an odd rattling sound between say 1500 and 2200 rpm, only when warmed up. 4.0 v6, 10,500 miles btw. Went to the dealer this AM, they want to keep it for a few more hours so they took me home, apparently they want to check the compression when cold. So, sounds like the engine has an issue. Yay. At least they'll give me a loaner if they need to keep it.

Funny, one reason I bought the '15 was to avoid new model teething problems with the 3.5, and I get an engine issue anyway. Go figure.

Anyway, was wondering if anybody has had a similar issue.

Will post again when I find out what the issue is.

Could certainly be a valve train noise, but it gets kinda loud when the engine is warmed up. Didn't do that before.
It's quiet when cold (well, as quiet as these things ever are, they are a noisy engine anyway), only valve clatter I've really noticed on this thing in the past is a little bit at cold startup, and that only for a couple seconds, this is a new noise and only when warmed up.
Maybe it's due to thinner warm oil (oil only has 2500 or so miles on it). Do these things have hydraulic lifters? If so maybe one is bleeding down a little and then pumping up over 2200 rpm?
Hopefully something simple, I'll see what they have to say this afternoon.

DOHC = no lifters. Mine makes a pretty terrible noise when cold, but goes away when hot. Interested to see what the issue is.

The 4.0 liter doesn't have hydraulic lifters. Bucket and shims.

The DOHC doesn't have anything to do with it. The 2.7 liter four cylinder has hydraulic lifters and DOHC.

    Update (with nothing conclusive!)

So, the dealer called me back in the afternoon, said they would want to keep the truck as they think there is an internal engine issue and they need to look into it, and they will give me a loaner. Shuttle van picked me up, when I got there they said they were sending me home with the truck, and to please bring it back Tuesday morning after the holiday weekend when they would give me a loaner, and probably want to keep the truck for at least a couple days. Weird, but whatever. I'll just use my bike and let the truck sit until Tuesday.

In hindsight I'm thinking that as well, but it's not that big of a deal, I'll just take care of it on the way to work.

So, they've had my truck for just about 2 weeks now, Toyota wanted to do some sort of intake cleaning procedure, the thought was that carbon buildup on a valve might be causing the noise. Sure, why not. Took the best part of a week to even get the fluid for the cleaning procedure, and gee, it was still making the noise. Well, I wasn't too hopeful about that anyway. So they think there is a bent valve and are now digging into the engine.

If there is a bent valve I assume that would be at least a cylinder head replacement. It would be nice if they put in a new engine, though.

Oh well, hopefully this goes well.

Oh yeah, got a Rav4 loaner, not my kind of car at all. Handles like a marshmallow and rides like crap. Roomy for the size of the vehicle, though.

I highly doubt there will be a new engine. If the valve is bent you will more than likely just get a head assembly.

New report from the dealer. Engine was torn down, heads and valves are ok, there was scoring in one cylinder, so a new short block is being installed. They hope to have it done by the end of the week. Hope so, I miss my truck.

Pretty bad they cannot fix an oil leak. Really bad they can't fix it without pulling the engine twice.

That kinda sucks. I have friends with Subaru's, they seem to be pretty good cars except for certain non-turbo engines that are known to need head gaskets pretty early, but I'm pretty sure the engine in the newer Crosstreks are a newer design. Hopefully they sort it out.

Hopefully my issue is resolved fairly painlessly and doesn't turn into repeat visits to sort out new issues from the engine being taken apart. Needing a new short block at 10,500 miles is not confidence inspiring, but then again plenty of people put hundreds of thousands of miles on these things, so I'm pretty confident that this issue with my engine is a fluke. I like the truck, so I hope so, as I'm not loving everything I hear about the 3.5 and the 3rd gens, I don't really dig modern GM stuff (other than the Stingray, which I can't afford, and anyway isn't a truck) so I'm not really interested in the Colorado/Canyon, the only other appealing midsize truck options are the upcoming return of the Ford Ranger to the states or perhaps Nissan will someday decide to to a serious update to the Frontier.

Got my truck back. The actual issue was scoring on the number 6 cylinder rod bearing. Which makes sense, cold thick oil no noise, when warmed up with thinner oil the noise would show up. A new short block was put in, sounds normal now. Seems to run fine.

6 year, 100,000 miles, that should be ok.
