a 265 is 30.6" and a 285 is 31.7" on a 16" wheel according to the tire calculator the 265's are barely taller than my stock 245's were

 

I think you're forgetting to change the aspect ratio.

 

just plugged in the numbers 265/70/16 not a 75 must be a bit of difference

 

285/75r16 will be fine on the streets without cab mount chop. Though you will need after market control arms to set your caster to minimum +2.5. Can't get there without it and when turning will rub the cab mounts. Off-road is a different story.

 

Not really the height that rubs but the width. Tires with more aggressive shoulders rub more when turning.

Last night...

Installed my ECGS bushing in the front diff.



Broke a bolt on the front diff skid trying to change the diff fluid, and couldn't get the effing drain plug to break lose so I could change the fluid. Ended up just topping it off and calling it a night. Any suggestions on how to get it lose without stripping the bs 10mm hex?

This morning, I dropped it off at Toyota for the rear leaf spring recall.

 

soak it with blaster and soak it some more and then some more

 

Soaked it with WD 40 last night as it was the only thing I had. Maybe I will pick up some blaster and soak it several times a day all weekend and try again Monday...

 

I'm just curious since I don't usually think of Utah as a "cancer state" but is the rust under your truck due to spring time snow melt, etc? or did your truck come from somewhere that salts roads?

 

A 50/50 mix of Automatic Transmission fluid and Acetone will work as well if you have it lying around.

 

It is from winter driving. Utah uses salt like it is going out of style from November-March. Our roads are white all winter , not always from snow, but from salt residue. Sometime it is so thick you leave a "dust" cloud of it behind you as you drive down the road once the roads dry out after a storm.

 

I just had this problem. I must have grossly over tightened it at the last change. I soaked it for 2 days, spraying it twice a day. I still stripped out the hole pretty bad. These plugs are soft! I finally gave in and took it to my mechanic. He hit it with the air hammer a few shots and that broke it loose. Make sure you have a new plug in your hands before removing the effed up one - and don't forget to make sure the fill plug isn't buggered too, before draining.

 

I actually do. I saw the video ChrisFix did about it. I just haven't had a chance to mix any up to try it out.

 

Gotcha, I grew up in SE Wisconsin, which is the same way.

It's just Wisconsin is smack dab in the middle of the "Rust Belt" so it makes sense to me when I see trucks there with cancer.
Yours actually doesn't look TOO bad all things considered.

 

I was able to get the fill plug lose, so I was at least able to top off the diff. So it isn't really an urgent thing. But I thought about getting a 3/8 adapter for my impact and having a go at it with it. I guess worst case I have to end up hammering a 11mm or 12 mm hex in to get the junk one out...I gave it a few light taps with a hammer last night out of frustration, but that didn't make any difference.

 

Yeah, it really isn't too bad. That picture really shows about the worst of it. I have a bit of rust at every weld, but other than that, the frame looks pretty good. I passed my frame inspection with "flying colors" according to my service advisor at the dealership.

 

WTF. It should only be torqued to 36lbs. Something tells me whoever changed it last made a boo boo.
