My gramps 97 taco went 270k before it needed a clutch. It towed probably 15k miles a year too. Frame finally crapped out in 2010 ish

My 2008 never needed a clutch but the throwout bearing failed a few times.

I have never had to replace a clutch in a toyota pickup for disk being worn out. Toasted one offroad, had a couple pressure plates fail offroad and had quite a few bearings fail. But all in all never had any serious problems until my 2015.

 

Kind of funny for those that have FB, three shifting styles for you from a couple guys harvesting. LOL
I'm the third type in my Tacoma.

Clutch question. I have a 2015 6 speed. The clutch feels solid when not pressed(as in movement side to side), but once the clutch is pressed in a little bit there is some side to side play. As in my clutch doesnt just move forward and back but also a little to the left and right. Is this normal? I am only asking because recently the clutch started making a squeaky noise when being presses and my dealer said it was normal.

 

i've only had 1 automatic vehicle in my lifetime. it was my very first car. a chevy camaro. bought it used and the oil and water mixed in the engine within 3 months. after that got a manual 1988 first gen and never looked back. now driving a manual 2nd gen and hope to get a manual 3rd gen in the next year or two.

 

Mine started doing the same thing... it was annoying at first, but I just ended up getting used to it. It doesn't affect the clutch that I'm aware of.. sometimes the little quirks aren't worth wrestling with....nothing is perfect in a vehicle

 

Squeaky is not normal! There's a service bulletin out on squeaky clutches. This has been a problem for years, yet Toyota hasn't fixed it. My 2014 was corrected per the service bulletin and they changed out 3 major parts. The new parts are supposedly "new and improved" but I can't see why Toyota didn't start building with the new-style parts years ago.

The repair fixed the problem for quite a while. Recently, it started squeaking again, but it was a different sound than before. A small dab of grease where the pedal contacts the plunger took care of it. I'm ok with applying a little grease every 10,000 miles or so.

 

Just picked up my Tacoma last Saturday loving it, the M/T shifts so sweet from 1-6, however reverse started being very sticky is now starting to loosen up after 350 km. No side to side play in clutch peddle or squeaking as of yet. Hopefully not at all

I had a 2009 MT Tacoma and from the factory it had a short throw shifter. It was new for that year (atleast compared to the 2006 I had before that) and was really nice. Im looking to get a new 2016 taco and theres no info about a short throw anymore, has it been removed? I assume there are aftermarket options as well but just curious. I know some people are far from the median, but generally how is the stock shifter in the 2016?

 

I had the short throw in my FJ it was nice very nice the taco isn't nearly as bad as the FJ stock throw. I like My Taco and the way it shifts

 

Nationwide search just done on auto trader:

DC, 6MT, 4x4. 13 trucks came up. Went through each of them. They were all auto, but listed as 6MT

 

cars.com has some real MT's (by looking at interior pix) and even more listed that do not have photos.

 

It allows me a sense of engagement with the automobile. We have one auto in the family (Lexus LX570), and that will be gone soon, once I get the new Tacoma.

Manuals are fun, I don't really know how else to describe it. I like being in control of when and how my truck shifts, using the clutch and throwing the gears. Driving an auto is just....boring. I feel like I know my truck more with a standard shift.

A lot of people I know say they go auto over manual because they spend too much time driving, but to me it's the opposite; I spend too much time driving to not have a little fun while doing it, and having a manual makes it more fun

 

I just like being in control. I like selecting the gear myself for the task at hand. Even with how great most autos are these days, I like being able to hold a gear a little longer (in anticipation of a pass), or shift like a granny to get the best mileage possible, etc, etc. For me more importantly I have never felt any auto that keeps you going slow enough in 4lo. 4lo, 1st gear just always feels lower in a manual. I drive steep off road pitches alot and like it SLOW!

 

Because my wife makes me buy manuals, and she's a control freak. True story.

 

Ah okay, do you have a 2016 Taco? I really enjoyed the way the factory short throw was, I know there will be aftermarket options too

I'm a big Manual Transmisssion fan, my last two CTD's were the NV5600 in my 04.5 and my Current 07 CTD C&C 3500 DRW has the G56. If I were to buy a new CTD it will have the Aisin Auto. Even though I didnt look or know of the manual for the Tacoma, I would have picked the auto anyway. So my thoughts on the new 6spd auto in my 2016 Tacoma, well it performs OK, but I find myself using the ECT when in traffic, due to the shifting strategy with the ECT off.

This might be a Bonehead Statement, but if I'm going to do some seriuos 4X4ing with a manual, I think it would be hard on the clutch when getting out of bad situations. (OK you flame me now)

 

Yes I have a 2016 Tacoma stick why else would I comment on the shifting? I also had a 2014 Baja, 2014 TTUE FJ and a super charged 2009 FJ stick then there is my 2005 Rubicon stick
