Actually now that I think about it- if an RTT is a truly rated 4 season tent and well insulated- it would have a HUGE advantage over a ground tent- not fighting with clearing snow to set up. Depending on how deep the snow is, setting up a wall tent is major PITA. It's not so bad with a small free standing 4 season, but it still requires snow removal.

I'm a hammocker of eight years now. Funny you posted the HHQ (hikinghq) link... Sgt. Rock who owns that's site is a very dear friend and engaged to my BFF!

If my wife wants to go back to a trailer/camper, this is what we'll do:

No shit?! A lot of our guys (scouts) have followed his blog!

I hammock camp when I can, but northern rocky weather makes it tough.

...Hate to disagree with you...but it is exactly the opposite!....Cold radiates up from the ground....and your sleeping bag gets compressed under you from your weight...so it affords the least amount of insulation....

...Even on a cot a foot off the ground it is warmer than on the ground, for the simple reason that cold air sinks....and the lowest point it can sink to is the ground....

...If you ever get caught in a severe snowstorm and have to scoop out a snow-cave to spend the night in....scooping out a shelf off the ground is much warmer than laying directly at ground-level....

...I learned that decades ago when I use to do a little climbing....but it was reinforced recently by no less than Bear Grylls....:D....( the dude may be a tad bit crazy...but he DOES know how to survive! ).........

you could always pull your bed off and store it. when the trucks were built in Japan, they were shipped without the beds. you should get one. you know you want it.

Had to stop by this thread to see if the ongoing pissing contest about sleeping in a "High Rise" or on the ground was still going on. It is. Have a good weekend whether you are sleeping on the ground or in a High Rise. And don't drink and drive.

He has never been out, just don't want him to freak out. From there we will get to the woods. We have places close by to go.
